About the Author
Stanley J. Tambiah is the Esther and Sidney Rabb Professor of Anthropology at Harvard University. He received his PhD from Cornell University in 1954. He joined the faculty at the University of Cambridge, where he taught for ten years, and was a Fellow of King's College. He went to the University of Chicago in 1973, and moved to Harvard Univesity in 1976. He began field work in Sri Lanka (1956-59), the island of his birth, and and later worked in Thailand. He is the author of eight books.

It is a very good read.

A fascinating account of the life and contribution that Leach made in his notable and often extraordinary career as a social anthropologist. His close friend Stanley Tambiah has done a splendid job of providing us with an insight into his personal and academic life during his wartime service and experiences in Burma, which contributed to his becoming a committed anthropologist. It is a very good read.

About the Author
Solomon Northup (1808 - c. 1864-1875) was an African American carpenter who was born free in Minerva, Essex County, New York, but was bound into slavery later in life for a period of twelve years. He regained his freedom in January 1853.

Extraordinary book, but there are better versions on Kindle

As slave stories go, this one is, in my view, without peer. Northup's s captivating tale -- which has gained attention because of the movie that shares the book's title -- is told in exacting detail with an easy prose. He sets the stage masterfully, describing people and places before proceeding into the narrative. Unlike works of fiction, this book is so compelling because, by all accounts, it is true. There is no polemical axe to grind, as with Uncle Tom (a novel at one point wryly referenced by Northup). Here you see both the brutality of slavery and the moments of kindness by slaves and even some slave owners. Solomon tells the story with clarity and intelligence.

The free versions on other sites I found were pretty poorly formatted, so spending a dollar for a polished version on Amazon is worthwhile, but this one is not the best of them. Granted, the book is formatted adequately, and any typographical errors in this version seem to be simple reproductions of the original.

However, the supporting material is a letdown. I read the version that includes the introduction by novelist Dolen Perkins-Valdez. That introduction is borderline insulting, as it makes only a weak attempt to separate accounts with fictional elements like Roots from an authentic account like this one. Worse still, Perkins-Valdez can't resist indulging in repeatedly referencing her own recently released slave novel, even going so far as to quote herself. There are almost no historical elements to this version beyond the main book -- no mention of Northup after the book, no mention of he writer who helped him pen the book, nothing. There is more information on the writer of the introduction than there is the author. One other oddity worth mentioning: the original book's preface -- the one done by the man who helped Northup write the book -- has been curiously excised from this version too. That makes this version something less than complete.

For those looking for a better version, you might consider Twelve Years a Slave - Enhanced Edition by Dr. Sue Eakin Based on a Lifetime Project. New Info, Images, Maps, which contains a robust amount of supporting material and, better still, is right now the same cost as this version.

The Truth Shall Set You Free of Lies

Growing up in the North,I had always found it hard to imagine that slavery not only existed in this country,but flourished.Through the years,I have read many an autobiography or history book concerning slavery and thought I knew it all. And yet I was blind.
Until I read Solomon Northrup's "12 Years a Slave." Where has this book been? It is a masterpiece of history,of one man,one free man's life. A true picture of 'The Old South'.
Mr. Northrup was a free black man with a beautiful wife and two daughters living in Saratoga,NY. He was lured from his home by slave traders who specialized in the awful practice of kidnapping free black citizens and selling them into slavery. Torn from his home and family,Mr.Northrup endured the worst that can happen to a human being,and still live.
And yet,he remained fair and honest,never stooping to the level some of his white masters did.
I am not going to rewrite the book in this review because I recommend reading it for yourself. Slavery was and is a vile institution.
Solomon Northrup is my new inspiration.
This book will shock you. But you will be the better for having read it.

moving story, very formal English

Wonderful and moving story. Gives much more insight into the characters and what happened than the movie did. Only negative is that it is written in the very formal English of the time and can be hard to read. It was also written as a description, and was not written to entertain. So it can be a little dry in parts. Amazing story, very informative. Very glad I read it.

I felt an aching compassion for young men embarking in troop trains to be slaughtered

Bertrand Russell was an utmost clinical analyzer of the scriptures of his colleague-philosophers. With his penetrating mathematical insights he could easily translate their often dark and contorted formulations into plain comprehensible sentences and expose the real meaning and/or the inner contradictions of their highbrow wordings.

In this book, he exposes harshly the morass of linguistics and Wittgenstein's `Philosophical Investigations', demolishes William James, tells how he destroyed unintentionally Frege's life work and gives insightful comments on Tarski, Ryle and his own struggle with induction.

Astonishingly, the main influence on his life as a philosopher was not a philosophic problem, but World War I: `One effect of that war was to make it impossible for me to go on living in a world of abstraction.' It turned him away from pure mathematics.

Morass of linguistics
Bertrand Russell had no `sympathy with those who treat language as an autonomous province.' For him, `the essential thing about language is that it has meaning, that it is related to something non-linguistic.'
As Karl Popper said, linguistics is nothing more than cleaning one's spectacles.

Wittgenstein
Bertrand Russell was extremely harsh for Wittgenstein's second philosophical period (the `Philosophical Investigations'), where `we are now told that it is not the world that we are to try to understand but only sentences', nor the separation of `what may count as knowledge from what must be rejected as unfounded opinion.'

Having revived the radio variety program with A Prairie Home Companion Garrison Keillor turned to broadcasting poetry in the daily short feature The Writer's Almanac. In any given week, probably more people hear him read poems than attend poetry readings and slams. That's good because his taste is excellent. But then, his criteria are golden. For him, a poem is good if it's memorable, recitable, and accessible. The almost-unheard-of-for-poetry sales of Good Poems (2002) suggest that many endorse his taste and criteria, and the sequel to that success gives them no reason to change their minds. As before, the range of poets represented is broad contemporarily (the majority are alive or very recently deceased) and historically (sixteenth to twenty-first century), though not internationally, for, with one exception (Psalm 51), English is these poems' language of origin. As before, too, these are predominantly poems of domesticity and ordinary things, and when a poem touches the genuinely extraordinary, it is related to everyday life; for instance, Stephen Dobyns' "Thelonious Monk" relates a particular instance of a kind of experience virtually everyone has--the discovery of greatness. Even those tired of Lake Wobegon, or who think Keillor's a bigoted Democrat (especially after Homemade Democrat, 2004), should grant that he knows good poetry. Ray Olson

Good Poems for the Common Man--and Woman: "I Wish I Had Danced More."

Garrison Keillor continues in his quest to bring poetry to the man and woman on the street in this his third collection of poems "as heard on the Writer's Almanac." Certainly he is to be commended for being the one individual who has done more than anyone else-- with the possible exception of perhaps Bill Collins--to bring new poetry converts into his church. Many is the time that I have sat in my car, having arrived at my destination before Mr. Keiller has finished his poem for the day in that immediately recognizable soothing voice of his, to get a fix for the day from his reading. (And sometimes I have ordered an obscure volume of poetry from an unknown poet he has just read, only to discover that too often Mr. K. has read the best poem in the collection!)

No amateur with words, himself, Mr. Keillor writes a decent introduction about his childhood in Minnesota, family travels, and how grade school teachers ruin poetry for our youth. "Americans are impatient with riddles and so they give poetry a wide berth, knowing from Miss Fernwood's 8th grade English class that a page of writing with an uneven right margin means a series of jokes with no punch lines, a puzzle with no right answers." Too often poets whom Keillor describes as "upward-striving" write about Europe, but not the writers he has selected in this collection of over 260 poems. He gives a whole laundry list of subjects that these poems write about, purely American, and Europe be damned.

Mr. Keillor includes a lot of poems from poets I know and like: Wendell Berry, Robert Bly, Charles Bukowski, Raymond Carver, Billy Collins, Stephen Dunn, Allen Ginsberg, Donald Hall, Robinson Jeffers, Galway Kinnell, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Grace Paley, Kenneth Rexroth, Theodore Roethke, W. D. Snodgdrass, Gary Snyder, William Stafford, John Updike, James Tate, Marge Percy, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Sara Teasdale, May Sarton, Donald Justice, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William Carlos Williams, Anne Sexton, Dana Gioia--and of course the father and mother of twentieth century American poetry, Mr. Whitman and Ms. Dickinson. Mr. Keiller even includes Johnny Cash for his "Folsom Prison Blues." (I cannot imagine, however, hearing anyone read this poem rather than sing it.)

There are even more poets I've never heard of in this big collection in praise of America. My two favorites are from poets previously unknown to me: The first is "Bridal Shower" by George Bilgere, a poem that resonated with me to the 12th power. I suspect others feel just as strongly about people who talk on cell phones in public. Here is the poem in its entirety.

Perhaps in a distant caf�,
Four or five people are talking
With the four or five people
Who are chatting on their cell phones this morning
In my favorite caf�.

And perhaps someone there,
Someone like me, is watching them as they frown,
Or smile, or shrug
At their invisible friends or lovers,
Jabbing the air for emphasis.

And, like me, he misses the old days,
When talking to yourself
Meant you were crazy,
Back when being crazy was a big deal.
Not just an acronym
Or something you could take a pill for.

I liked it
When people who were talking to themselves
might actually have been talking to God or an angel.
You respected people like that.

You didn't want to kill them,
As I want to kill the woman at the next table
With the little blue light on her ear
Who has been telling the emptiness in front of her
About her daughter's bridal shower
In astonishing detail
For the past thirty minutes.

O person like me
Phoneless in your distant cafe,
I wish we could meet to discuss this,
And perhaps you would help me
Murder this woman on her cell phone,

After which we could have a cup of coffee,
Maybe a bagel, and talk to each other,
Face to face.

The second poem, from a section named "Never Expected To Be There" is on a totally different subject, one that will tear your heart out, "Meadowbrook Nursing Home" by Alice N. Persons. The narrator of the poem takes her cat Lucy, who is fifteen and "getting creaky herself," to visit Mrs. Harris in a nursing home. Mrs. Harris speaks:

"I had a cat called Lily--she was so pretty, all white.
She was with me for twenty years, after my husband died too.
She slept with me every night--I loved her very much.
It's hard, in here, since I can't get around."

Lucy was settling in on the bed.
"You won't believe it, but I used to love to dance.
I was a fool for it! I even won contests.
I wish I had danced more.
It's funny, what you miss when everything. . . . . is gone."
This last was a murmur. She'd fallen asleep.

The narrator then goes home and dances to Tina Turner. This poem, to paraphrase Mr. Keillor in describing Emily Dickinson's poetry in his first collection of poems GOOD POEMS, will take your head off.

A Gem on Every Page

Having Good Poems for Hard Times, by Garrison Keillor on my book shelf is like having a big bouqet of flowers of many colors in my home. I purchased this (and others) from Amazon, and was pleased how fast I found it in my mailbox. There's a poem for everyone between the covers of this book, even for those who've never read a poem before, or say they don't like poetry! From well-known poets of the past to more modern ones I had never heard of, each poem has a special meaning just for me. As it will for you. So I bought a couple more from Amazon, for my friends. Good Poems for Hard Times will make great Christmas presents.

I keep my little volume beside my bed, and pick a flower from it whenever I'm in the mood - which is often. Makes me want to read Mr. Keillor's other poetry selections.

Useful but heavy read

This was one of the first books in the series I read of my own accord, and I've revisited it several times since. I bought it mainly because as a teacher of English in the Czech Republic, one of the main difficulties of my learners is the use of the definite and indefinite articles. It's certainly a challenge to read, but very informative. I find the first part, where Lyons discusses traditional approaches to definiteness, like familiarity, identifiability, uniqueness and inclusiveness, particularly useful, as it sharpens one's perception of the elements of definiteness. Another useful realisation that I got from this book was that definiteness is not restricted to definite articles or affixes, but can also be found in other parts of the language system, which made it easier for me to explain it to my students through finding counterparts in their own language.

Guide to build a large web application

If you want to build a web application, you need to consider WordPress as a framework because WordPress and its numerous plugins may provide you with many useful built-in functionalities. If you want to build a web application based on WordPress, you definitely need to read this book.

The book has provided me with a guide to build a complete web application using WordPress as a framework; from user management, data manipulation, through back-end and front-end user interfaces. The resulting application will not be a toy application, but an industrial-strength application.

The book taught me advanced techniques with the emphasis of a good design. The author thoughtfully discussed about the issues of usability (good user interfaces), code reusability, performance, etc. as any large application would require.

However, the book is not for a beginner. Despite the author's best intention to explain the basics, I was stuck as early as in Chapter 2 because I lacked the knowledge of WordPress Core. Only after I had read another excellent book (WordPress Design and Development by Brad Williams, et.al.), I could continue with this book (WordPress Web Application Development by Ratnayake). This is understandable because Ratnayake's book contains so much advanced information about building a large application. It simply has no enough room to cater more basic knowledge.

I have finished with this book, and I am glad that now I have the confidence to build a complete WordPress web application.

Must read for developers

As the title implies it covers using WordPress as your application framework. I highly recommend this book even if you are not building a web app. The author does a great job of breaking down complex development techniques that are useful regardless of how you plan to use WordPress. I found learning about how to use built in functions the most helpful. Did not realize how much WordPress provides for you as far as development goes.
