The fifth book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series follows the darkest year yet for our young wizard, who finds himself knocked down a peg or three after the events of last year. Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an excuse to ridicule and discount the teen. Gone is the wide-eyed innocent, the whiz kid of Sorcerer's Stone. Here we have an adolescent who's sometimes sullen, often confused (especially about girls), and always self-questioning. Grade 4 Up-Harry has just returned to Hogwarts after a lonely summer. Dumbledore is uncommunicative and most of the students seem to think Harry is either conceited or crazy for insisting that Voldemort is back and as evil as ever. Angry, scared, and unable to confide in his godfather, Sirius, the teen wizard lashes out at his friends and enemies alike. The head of the Ministry of Magic is determined to discredit Dumbledore and undermine his leadership of Hogwarts, and he appoints nasty, pink-cardigan-clad Professor Umbridge as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and High Inquisitor of the school, bringing misery upon staff and students alike. This bureaucratic nightmare, added to Harry's certain knowledge that Voldemort is becoming more powerful, creates a desperate, Kafkaesque feeling during Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts. The adults all seem evil, misguided, or simply powerless, so the students must take matters into their own hands. Harry's confusion about his godfather and father, and his apparent rejection by Dumbledore make him question his own motives and the condition of his soul. Also, Harry is now 15, and the hormones are beginning to kick in. There are a lot of secret doings, a little romance, and very little Quidditch or Hagrid (more reasons for Harry's gloom), but the power of this book comes from the young magician's struggles with his emotions and identity. Particularly moving is the unveiling, after a final devastating tragedy, of Dumbledore's very strong feelings of attachment and responsibility toward Harry. Children will enjoy the magic and the Hogwarts mystique, and young adult readers will find a rich and compelling coming-of-age story as well.

*Starred Review* No, you can't put it down, but believe me, you'll wish you could. This is not an easy book to lug around. Its worldwide hype aside, the fifth installment in Harry Potter's saga should be judged on the usual factors: plot, characters, and the quality of the writing. So how does it fare? One thing emerges quickly: Rowling has not lost her flair as a storyteller or her ability to keep coming up with new gimcracks to astound her readers. But her true skills lie in the way she ages Harry, successfully evolving him from the once downtrodden yet hopeful young boy to this new, gangly teenager showing all the symptoms of adolescence--he is sullen, rude, and contemptuous of adult behavior, especially hypocrisy. This last symptom of the maturing Harry fits especially well into the plot, which finds almost all of the grown-ups in the young wizard's life saying one thing and doing another, especially those at the Ministry of Magic, who discredit Harry in the media to convince the citizenry that Voldemort is not alive. Rowling effectively uses this plot strand as a way of introducing a kind of subtext in which she takes on such issues as governmental lying and the politics of personal destruction, but she makes her points in ways that will be clearly understood by young readers. To fight for truth and justice--and to protect Harry--the Order of the Phoenix has been reconstituted, but young Potter finds squabbling and hypocrisy among even this august group. And in a stunning and bold move, Rowling also allows Harry (and readers) to view an incident from the life of a teenage James Potter that shows him to be an insensitive bully, smashing the iconic view Harry has always had of his father. Are there problems with the book? Sure. Even though children, especially, won't protest, it could be shorter, particularly since Rowling is repetitious with descriptions (Harry is always "angry"; ultimate bureaucrat Doris Umbridge always looks like a toad). But these are quibbles about a rich, worthy effort that meets the very high expectations of a world of readers. Ilene Cooper

About to fall apart

I am very upset with the turn out of this book. When I read it i'm going to be afraid that it's going to fall apart because it already is. For something this worn down I would have rather paid half of what I did.

In the start of the book, we find Harry doing his homework by flashlight under his bed sheets- as any proof of his time at that wizarding school is forbidden by the Drusley’s. It’s Harry’s birthday and for the first time in his life, he receives birthday cards and presents from his friends Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid. During a visit from Aunt Marge, Vernon and Harry make a deal, if he can keep Hogwarts a secret, Vernon will sign Harry’s permission slip to visit Hogsmead on the weekends. Unfortunately that goes out the window when Marge insults Harry’s family and he accidentally inflates her, whoops. The Knight Bus then picks up Harry after he leaves the house suddenly, but not after seeing something peculiar in the bushes…
The main conflict of this novel is the fact that escaped prisoner Sirius Black is on the loose and dangerous. Dementors have made Hogwarts their home for the year and even made a little pit stop on the Hogwarts Express to make sure Sirius Black wasn’t aboard. While they didn’t find the prisoner on the train, they did find Harry, because of the sorrow and death he has already witnessed the dementors were drawn to him. The mysterious person (who we find out to be the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher) is at the ready to produce a Patronus charm, which is used to ward of dementors with a happy memory.
The school year starts and the dementors are not respecting the boundaries that Dumbledore has put into place. They even disrupt a Quidditch match and send Harry flying off of his broom and his Nimbus 2000 into the Whomping Willow. Harry get used to his new classes and the frequent disappearance and reappearance of Hermione as she seems to be taking more class than any average witch or wizard can handle. Third year is when students start taking Divination and it’s not Harry’s favorite subject to say the least. Professor Trelawney often tells Harry he is in grave danger after finding the Grim in his cup, and she becomes overcome with a prophecy when they are alone in the classroom. "It will happen tonight. The Dark Lord lies alone and friendless, abandoned by his followers. His servant has been chained these twelve years. Tonight, before midnight, the servant will break free and set out to rejoin his master. The Dark Lord will rise again with his servant's aid, greater and more terrible than ever before. Tonight... before midnight... the servant... will set out... to rejoin... his master..." (ch.16 pg.324)
The story concludes with Harry, Ron and Hermione using Hermione’s Time Turner to not only save Hagrid’s friend Buckbeak, but also Harry’s innocent godfather Sirius Black, who has spent the last 12 years in Azkaban for a crime he did not commit. With the help of their new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher (who is also a werewolf!) Remus Lupin; Harry finds out more about his parents past and how their secret keeper and friend Peter Pettigrew betrayed them.
This is easily my favorite Harry Potter book out of the seven. I’d give it ten out of five stars if I could. It introduced me to my favorite character of the series (Remus Lupin) and helped to continue the story of Harry Potter and helped Harry find out more about his parents before they died. He also was reconnected with his godfather and James’ best friend Sirius Black.

A Breath of High-Octane Oxygen!

Who’d have thought that two warring neighbors in an upscale neighborhood (Malibu, CA) could escalate their squabbles to an epic level? I spent a lot of time wondering "Blimey, could this work in everyday life?"

Hey folks, here’s my tuppenceworth. Two memorable characters: One good, a sophisticated lawyer, but still a “babe in the woods” compared to the other, a crafty son-of-a-gun, more cunning than the Horned One himself, and this bloke, well, he wears his charisma thick on his sleeve. So I’m thinking, have we finally entered the age of the thinking thriller? If one discounts the purple prose pouring unctuously from Machiavelli’s lips (which incidentally fits this impostor’s persona to a T), it’s a bloody brilliant novel—a novel exploiting a novel concept! The plot builds momentum like an opus. If you must know, by the time it reached its crescendo towards chapter 35 or so, I was on my feet cheering, ready with a standing ovation and a bottle of Michelob in my right hand—cf. last chapter. All right, I’m a bit of a cat lover, too, but still!

I’ve got to warn you, though, or you'll find yourself sneaking moments out of your busy day to decrypt the meaning of life using Machiavelli’s clever word acrobatics, which goes by a fancy French name for voodoo-something-or-other, but is nonetheless an eminently patentable formula if you ask me! In fact, I think I've just glimpsed the writing on the wall, and if I’m not deluded it reads: CHASE’S BOOK GARNERS PLAUDITS ON GLOBAL SCALE!

For a jaded bloke like myself, reading Know Thy Neighbor was like a breath of high octane oxygen after spending hours in a cigar smoke-filled room.

About the Author
Donna J. Phinney is the Program Director for the Dental Assisting Program at Spokane Community College. She has spent more than twenty years in the dental field as a dental assistant, a dental office consultant, an office manager and an educator. Donna Phinney holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Eastern Washington University and a Master's Degree in Education from Whitworth College. Ms. Phinney received her fellowship from the American Dental Assistants Association and is a certified dental assistant. She is active in the Washington State Dental Assisting Association, has served as a consultant for the American Dental Association for seventeen years and was a Commissioner for the American Dental Association, appointed by the American Dental Assistants Association.

Judy Halstead is retired after thirty years as a dental assisting instructor and more than fifteen years as a practicing dental assistant. Formerly the dental assisting program director for a private college and a high school skills center, Ms. Halstead was active with local, state, and national Dental Assistant Associations for thirty-five years, serving as president of the Washington State chapter. She often presented lectures and workshops at local, state, and regional dental conferences, and served as an American Dental Association consultant. Ms. Halstead earned a BA from Eastern Washington University, is a certified dental assistant, and holds an expanded functions certificate.

My friend purchased this for a job that she wanted (dental assistant) and she read and studied this book amongst others and learned a lot. She was not even in school for dental assisting. When she got the job, she knew more that other new workers. Great buy.

Oil & Gas Industry "Soup to Nuts"

I am doing some work in the Oil and Gas Industry and was looking for a comprehensive overview of the industry as a level-set so I can get up to speed quickly. "The Global Oil & Gas Industry" was just what I was looking for. Reading it reminded me of one of my textbooks from one of my MBA courses even down to the quality of the pages (very high quality, glossy paper).

Reading "The Global Oil & Gas Industry" was definitely well worth my time. This book is very well written, comprehensive, and addresses the subject from a global view...just perfect for my purposes. It is so thorough and so well structured that it is surely a valuable read for Oil & Gas veterans and novices alike.

In 1999, she received the CHADD Hall of Fame Award for her ground-breaking work on women and girls with ADHD. Dr. Nadeau is a frequent lecturer both nationally and internationally focusing on her solution-focused, integrative approach to treating ADHD. She has focused for many years on issues relating to careers and employment for those with ADHD, and is currently developing the ADHD Career Center to provide strength-based, ADHD-aware career exploration and career coaching to college students and adults.

terrific updating of a classic

I have used Doug Buehl's previous editions of this book for about 20 years because I find something helpful in it for almost any any teaching situation. I have embraced other favorite texts for professional development, too, but I have never abandoned this one. This newest edition has such a masterful approach to integrating the Common Core State Standards across the content areas that I am recommending it heartily. You can't go wrong adding this book to your professional library.

Strategies were the best

A lot of the strategies in this book were useful after I tweaked them a bit (which is what Buehl recommends in another book he wrote). The book is broken down by section, what strategies a teacher might need when front loading, establishing concepts, etc. This was massively helpful so I didn't have to read all the strategies in this book to find the ones that might help me teach. I purchased this book for my Master's in Teaching program, but I recommend this book to any teacher needing an idea boost on lessons.

This is a good story,though I was a little disappointed when it ended rather abruptly, I had hoped for more, more explanation into The Society; their rituals etc. (Maybe another book a part 2 perhaps)
Plus the relationship between the character could have lead to a more comprehensive story
I mean the premise was there; an arranged marriage, a secret sect, unusual rituals, learning each other; the list goes on

Because it matters.

This book has a smooth flow. It caters to how I like stories about superpowers; a focus on relationships over violence, and realistic consequences for using powers, all with a fast pace. When you put people with a high capacity for violence against each other, bystanders and participants get killed. Using superpowers is risky. Consequences are devastating and long-term. The violence ends up costly and sad rather than the high point of the fun. This is good stuff.

The story is full of references to modern media. The characters are templated off various popular characters in comic books, pulling from them the distinctive relationship elements or power sets or back stories and filing off the serial numbers. This adds a dimension to the meaning and actions that resonates for people who have a long investment in super-powered stories. However, Chandler's approach is more down to earth as far as the mortality, social cost, and moral ambiguity of these powers. Chandler's explanation of where super-powers come from is useful, ties into the story, doesn't slow things down, and provides an excellent reason for these powers to be in the world.

The role of the heroes in propping up the status quo is only good insofar as the status quo deserves protection. The post-911 feel of authority figures with secret prisons and ethically repulsive tactics shifts the superheroes out of the role of protagonist, leaving room for anti-heroes to step up to make a better world.

Short chapters and a focused cast of characters help the story move smoothly. Chandler does an excellent job of defining the most critical heroes and villains so they are distinct and evocative. The canvas of the story's scope is broad enough to pull in elements as diverse as the source of superpowers being critical to the outcome of the tale, and detailed enough to explore the motivations and histories of main characters.

With comics, it is easy to get a sense that in the end it doesn't matter what happens in the latest "earth shattering" event. Eventually most characters will be restored. It is refreshing to have stories like this, then, where the characters may actually be able to change the world. Or die trying.

Extremely dogmatic - but a good read nonetheless

If Michael Moore were to write quality work in this genre, this is what it would look like (perhaps this is him under a pen name).

The bottom line is that this I found this book to be an excellent read. If you liked "Confessions of a D List Supervillan" you will probably like this book as well. The characters are well-thought out, the author maintains a constant level of action that easily keeps the reader interested (yet is not overwhelming), and the plot moves along nicely. I also thought the book had a comfortable length, snappy prose, and maintained consistency with perspective (i hate it when these books start out pretty logical then become increasingly fantastic).

A particularly strong point is that the book does not appear to structured as a launch pad for yet another franchise. While it might or might not become one, it is very stand-alone as it is.

My only problem is the amazingly ham-handed leftist angle. The heroes are all from some PC demographic (illegal alien, gay, African American, Japanese with history of internship in WWII, real alien, caucasian hippies, etc...) and the villains are WASP-y establishment types. Recurring themes are capitalism bad-communism good, governnent evil on every level, big companies are evil, sexualized women are evil, etc... the author pretty much hits it all (pollution, US policy toward communist regimes, drug manufacturers, income disparity, illegal immigration, torture, battered women, internet spying, religion is the opiate of the people, you name it...).

I can handle some of this as all are pretty common themes (read a Stephen King book...) but I have never been force fed so much far-left dogma in one serving. The fact this did not overwhelm the book's many good points is a testament as to how well-done it is.

If you can handle being beaten over the head with the politics, this is a safe bet.

Astounding Antagonists wield Great Powers with little Responsiblity.

Rafael Chandler's Astounding Antagonists is a dark take on a world led by typical super heroes, the kind of heroes that know they're on the side of capital-G Good, and that use and abuse their position of power for personal gain and petty goals as much as they use it to shape the world. It's a parable on what happens when you consciously use your great power, and how it cannot be untainted by political views or personal ideology when you really act on a global scale. The people that have different ideas than the heroes are by definition the villains, even if all they want is a better life for their kind.

While the heroes and villains of Chandler's Astounding Antagonists can easily be mapped to well known heroes and villains of the mainstream comic book lines, they all have intresting backgrounds and strengths and weaknesses. In a way this saves him from bogging down his book with lots of exposition the target audience would easily be bored by.

The story itself reminded me somewhat of the modern classic "Kingdom Come" -- a modern take of comic super hero reality, executed with an eye to all the repercussions this would have on the world.

That said, not all the heroes are bad, not all the villains are good, but Rafael Chandler manages to shape a story where the world is better in the end and humane intentions prevail. The book doesn't end in a "happily ever after", but it allows a positive outlook and lays the groundwork for a sequel. One I would buy and read without hesitation.
