About the Author
Kristin Prevallet is a consulting hypnotist certified through the National Guild of Hypnotists and an Integral Life Coach certified through the International Association of Counselors and Therapists. She received a M.A. in Humanities through the University of Buffalo and has received residencies and awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, PEN America, the Poetry Society of America, George Mason University, and Spalding University. She currently directs the Center for Mindbody Studies where she leads workshops and works with private clients. Her writings on poetics and consciousness have appeared in a variety of publications including Spoon River Review, The Chicago Review, Fourth Genre, and Reality Sandwich; she is the author of four books including You, Resourceful: Return To Who You Want To Be, I, Afterlife: Essay in Mourning Time and most recently, Everywhere Here and in Brooklyn: A Four Quartets. A great book, even for seasoned poets

This is a fantastic book, written by a poetic practitioner for sure! I admire Prevallet's poetry, and this work is a fantastic complement to it. For those interested in mystical traditions, neuroscience, or how to move past those "writer's blocks," Prevallet has done the practice and research around these fields of study. I am in awe of her examination of the body, language, neurology, history, poetic and religious traditions, memoir, and biofeedback--and how they relate writing to life, to open up creativity and "write without self-judgement." As practical as it is scholarly, I personally can vouch for this book. As a conceptual writer, this book helped me to reconnect with my lyric roots with the "Automatic Writing Process" section and other creative inspirations this book evokes. Really, stay away from those "how-to" books and give this one a try. This is the real deal.

A unique approach to the creative process

I found this book only because Brenda Hillman mentioned it in an article I read online. This short book not only goes into the creative process, but is creatively written, ventures into how to communicate with someone who has Alzheimer's- and shows how verbally creative humans are. If you are teaching a writing workshop, look for this book. It discusses "the dreaming arm" and how freeing that arm is essential to writing. This book may help you understand the well known sentence, "I don't know what I want to say until I write it."

About the Author
Dr. M�ller is currently the M.F. Jonsson Professor of Hearing, University of Texas at Dallas, the Callier Center for Communication Disorders. He was on the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine for 19 years, where he held positions as Research Professor of Otolaryngology and later of Neurological Surgery. From 1988 to 1997 he held the position of Professor of Neurological Surgery. He received his medical education at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, where he also held faculty positions for more than 10 years. Dr. M�ller is founder and Editor-in-Chief of the international journal Hearing Research.

Fun read and very insightful

I loved this book. I discovered intuitive eating about six years ago and did really well with it for a couple of years but then fell back into the diet trap. This book offers such good insight and I love her wit. I also really like that this book says that it's okay to want to be thin because so many books like this try to tell you to accept your body the way it is.
I look forward to continuing on my journey and I'm confident with her tactics I can be successful.

UPDATE:
I thought I would add some to my story to try and help others. A lot of the reviews about this book talk about how fantastic it is and how quickly they were able to jump into hunger directed eating and they just started eating really healthy all the time because they wanted to. For me it was not that fast and simple. Don't get me wrong, this is an excellent book and one I highly recommend for anyone struggling with dieting. Before finding the book I had lost about 50 lbs. over the course of two years with a series of different diets and was at what was supposed to be my 'happy weight'. But honestly I was more miserable than before I lost the weight because I was so obsessed with food and dieting. I would gain and lose 10 lbs. over and over again and was just plain miserable. I knew there had to be a better way. But for me personally it really took some time to implement the practices. I think for a long time I tested the theory of really "opening the gates". I definitely went through a 'donuts and Doritos' stage because I really didn't believe I would let go of dieting. I remember when I first read the book I was a little sad that I would never again eat sweets or candy because quite frankly before this book the only time I allowed myself to eat those kind of things was during a binge. I slowly realized over time that I could eat those things in a non-binge way. It also took some time before I started losing weight. But once I started losing, the weight literally fell off without me trying. I lost about 15 lbs in 4 months and was thinner and healthier than I had ever been on any diet.

You will have little moments of victory and if you're patient it will happen with time. For me a really big victory came when I went to lunch with some co-workers at a Mexican restaurant. I used to either eat two baskets of chips because I was blowing my diet anyway or only allow myself to have 12 chips because I knew how many (WW) points that was. At this particular lunch I didn't even think about it and it wasn't until we were leaving that I realized I wasn't overly full or still hungry. I didn't make any kind of conscious effort to not overeat, it just sort of happened. That was a HUGE moment for me and to be honest one I never would have imagined being possible. But keep in mind, this was months after I had first read Intuitive Eating (another book on listening to your body) so it wasn't something that happened overnight.

I think the best thing you can do with this book is take the advice that works for you and ignore the stuff that doesn't. For me personally I really don't do well when I'm not weighing myself. Often after a binge I imagine that I've gained at least five lbs. so if I step on the scale and I'm only up one lb. it actually helps me mentally. Also, I really don't like the idea of having a pair of pants or whatever that you try on periodically because this just makes me feel like a failure when they don't fit as quickly as I want them to.

And lastly, as I mentioned earlier I did fall in the diet trap after a couple years of intuitive eating. I honestly forgot what it was like to be in that diet mentality and got caught up with a "super healthy" eating plan at my gym by convincing myself it wasn't a diet. It has taken me a long time to get out of the diet mentality again so please do yourself a favor and never go on a diet again! Best of luck!

This is a tentative review because these things take time

Update March 30, 2015: I wrote more in the comments on this post but I wanted to say this book has really, really helped me. The principles do work and even if you want to forget them they stay in your mind just waiting. This book is a relief.

There are many rave reviews here and they inspired me to get the book, but I do note that so many of them don't seem to be written after the reviewer has spent a long time with the new way of eating. After reading so many diet books and so many reviews of diets (so...many....), and after raving to my friends and family about this new diet or that new diet, I'm feeling awfully gunshy. I've been trying to implement the guidelines in this book for about 9 days or so, I've lost three pounds and finding this extremely easy...but it's still very new. So what I want to do is mention a few of the things that I find very valuable about this book that have changed my entire perspective about eating (regardless of how much weight I lose), and I will also try to keep this review updated from time to time.

I just really needed to hunker down and find a way to eat that I could live for the rest of my life. That's all I wanted. I've had weight loss surgery, I have done many different diets, I have worked out a ton (and enjoyed it even when it didn't help me lose weight on the scale). I have been committed to fasting, I have been committed to low carb. I monitor everything I eat and weighed myself every day for years, keeping a nice running chart. I weigh my food. I track everything in myfitnesspal. But most of the time, even when I was doing any or all of those things, I failed a lot. Like, super-failed. I couldn't even stick to any diet for more than about a month and I'd struggle the whole month. I just kept jumping from diet to diet. So while I tracked my food every day, I was still tracking lots of binges. And while I weighed myself every day, it was always just a fight not to regain or to lose the regain. I gave up on actually becoming thinner. I just wanted to find a way to eat that I could live with and not gain 50 pounds, which for me meant not restricting any kind of food for "external" reasons. I couldn't make my food choices based on what other people thought was best because it would never, ever last. I just...wanted a way to eat that would allow pizza to be my favorite food. Fatty, cheesy pizza with meat and thick crust. My nutritionist tried to help me stop with this "rebellious" eating but it really had to be my way. I just had to find my way.

This book has really opened my eyes and I will always appreciate my body more because of the things I learned with the help of this book. One of the first mind-blowing things I learned: having a slow metabolism is not a bad thing. If your metabolism is "slow" that also tends to mean you're not as hungry as others. This shocked me because having a "slow" or "low" metabolism is the bane of the dieting world and there is so much advice aimed at keeping your metabolism running high. Eat every three hours. Eat breakfast within 30 minutes of waking. Don't eat at night. Eat this precise balance of ratios at every meal. Eat this or that metabolism-boosting food, but definitely not this or that metabolism-killer. And so on.

Never before had I personally encountered the idea that having a slow metabolism could actually work to my benefit. I have always been kind of low-energy, the kid that can read for hours but gets exhausted at the thought of climbing a tree (not even doing it, just the thought). I've never liked eating breakfast. I could go hours and hours before desiring anything at all, in fact, forcing myself to eat first thing makes me sick. I know my metabolism is slow. And I knew that my problem was overeating because I didn't feel good, I didn't feel comfortable after eating "that extra bit", I just felt worse. And I knew that overeating is what killed the many diets I tried. Overeating and feeling like I had to fight my stubborn body. But what if I stopped fighting completely and just paid attention to how I actually felt? Not how other people feel, not how other people eat.

Ok, sounds great. But the binging. Oh God the binging. The week before I read this book, I had a day where I ate a 14 inch pizza, plus a "pizza for one", plus 8 deep fried brownie bites, plus a regular brownie for good measure, and some popcorn chicken too. And I forced myself to have a big bowl of "healthy" cereal for breakfast. I know because I never stopped tracking, not even that other day where literally all I ate was a giant bag of animal crackers when I was supposed to be "fasting". How in the world was I going to stop "eating the world" like that? Just how? And don't just tell me "only eat when you're hungry" (thankfully, Josie doesn't). And don't just tell me "listen to your body" either because what does that even mean? My body says it wants lots of brownies every day, I was certain of it.

Nope. I can tell you that this week I had two hot fudgy brownies in.my.home and I said "eh" and left them alone. I had pizza and I saved most of it for the.next.day. How? Thankfully, the book is full-to-bursting of strategies and principles that help you figure out what "hunger-directed eating" means for you. You can try to implement all of them at once or you can just start working on a few at a time and see what happens. Like, did you know the reason food stops tasting as good as the first bite is because your body is letting you know it's pretty satisfied? I didn't know. I tested this. I found this to be true. Instant epiphany, because now I don't have to feel like I'm missing out if I stop eating. I'm totally not missing out when the food's not delicious anymore. If the second chocolate bar is nowhere near as good as the first, what's the point? The book is full of info like this and all kinds of things to test and try for yourself and in the process, you're training yourself to recognize what's going on inside your own body. So I'll keep going, even though I'm still certain it must fall apart because this is kind of ridiculously easy and nothing is easy...right?

History of Disordered Eating - This Book Changed My Life

I read this book three months ago, and I can sufficiently say that my life has been changed forever. I have been counting calories for five years, since I was 17 years old, and this book changed how I look at food all together.

As a long-time athlete, I noticed that after following this book my body became so much more toned after just a few weeks and there were big improvements in my performance. Instead of eating what I was "supposed to eat", I was eating what my body actually wanted and therefore, giving my body the fuel it wanted to build muscle my way and sufficient calories to do it.

Before this book, I always ate meat because I thought I had to, to be healthy, but I never liked it. But, once I started eating what I wanted, I dropped the meat, and I realized that when I did eat it, my stomach was always upset. It's mind-boggling to me that I never linked these two things before this book. Now, I am pretty much a vegetarian and my body is doing great on protein from other sources (milk especially which was a "bad" food in the past since I refused to drink any calories).

I feel so much more comfortable in my own skin after reading this book and, I rarely even think about food except when I am hungry and feel no guilt for eating what I want to eat.

Don't get me wrong - the first two months were TOUGH in terms of all my food emotional baggage but, I am so glad that I stuck with this. I actually cried when I went on my first all out shopping trip because I realized for the very first time in my adult life, I had gone to the grocery store and bought what I actually wanted to buy instead of a cart full of Special K chips, diet soda, and Skinny Cow ice cream.

I finally feel like my body and I are on the same team again. It's the best feeling in the world.

UPDATE (11 MONTHS LATER):
I am so happy that I came across this book. Ever since reading it back in February, my stress has been cut in half because I don't spend 75 percent of every day thinking about what I can/can't eat or what I will eat next. I have maintained my weight and have completely moved past the Doughnuts and Doritos phase to eating almost all unprocessed/minimally processed foods (after realizing that most heavily processed stuff makes me feel exhausted and depressed).

It still remains bizarre to me that I am now able to have real ice cream, chips, and chocolate in the house and only have any desire to eat it when I actually want it vs. have it all disappear in a few days just because I know it's there. There has been a gallon of ice cream in my freezer for like a month and a half now that I've barely touched, which is crazy to me. Office goodies have also lost almost all appeal to me which is funny because I remember sitting at my desk this time last year consumed by the idea of the Christmas cake or cookies in the break room.

In short, my quality of life has increased dramatically since reading this book. BUY IT - IT'S AMAZING.

UPDATE (1.5 YEARS LATER):
I remain happy that I discovered this book because I can identify it as both the single reason that my life is no longer defined by food and why I was able to break down the ironclad barriers I had built regarding food, allowing myself to relax, stop counting calories, and LIVE. I can safely say any draw to junky, processed food has been severely minimized if not eliminated after taking Spinardi's advice to see how food makes me feel (most processed sweets and junk make me incredibly tired and unhappy).

In this new life, there is no binging because there is no restriction. Heck, I can't even remember the last time I ate enough to be uncomfortably full, having stopped eating and lost interest way before that point (including major holidays, which were notoriously stuff-my-face days and feeling full and sick the rest of the night before reading this book). The reality is once you discover how delicious food can be when you are actually hungry; it doesn't have much of a draw when not hungry.

However, for the sake of being completely honest, I have since moved on from Spinardi's model, not because it doesn't have it's strong points but because it was reaching a point when it wasn't fitting into my life anymore. It can be very difficult to wait until you are hungry every time you eat from a logistics standpoint. Spindardi writes against "preemptive eating," i.e. eating before you are hungry to stave off hunger, and I understand where she is coming from. However, sometimes waiting to be hungry is a luxury I don't always have being as I might not be able to answer that hunger until several hours after it arrives (resulting in a grumpy, low blood sugar monster).

In a perfect world, I could have access to whatever I wanted to eat at the exact moment I am hungry, but life just doesn't work like that as meetings and plans often get in the way. A typical example of this would include knowing I am going out at night to something that may not involve food (or involve overpriced, crap food - movies, sports games, etc.) and having to eat dinner before actual hunger is reached to avoid getting hangry later on. I will continue to base my eating on the fundamentals of this book but have since moved to a more traditional three meal a day plan, letting my hunger decide when to eat the majority of the time, but realizing that it is not always possible to wait until full hunger and knowing how to deal with that.

I continue to recommend this book to anyone looking to break the diet cycle. As I said in one of my earlier updates - it is a life changer!

About the Author
Lita Epstein, who earned her MBA from Emory University’s Goizueta Business School, enjoys helping people develop good financial, investing, and tax planning skills.
While getting her MBA, Lita worked as a teaching assistant for the financial accounting department and ran the accounting lab. After completing her MBA, she managed finances for a small nonprofit organization and for the facilities management section of a large medical clinic.
She designs and teaches online courses on topics such as investing for retirement, getting ready for tax time, and finance and investing for women. She’s written more than ten books, including Streetwise Retirement Planning and Trading For Dummies.
Lita was the content director for a financial services Web site, MostChoice.com, and managed the Web site Investing for Women. As a Congressional press secretary, Lita gained firsthand knowledge about how to work within and around the Federal bureaucracy, which gives her great insight into how government programs work. In the past, Lita has been a daily newspaper reporter, magazine editor, and fundraiser for the international activities of former President Jimmy Carter through The Carter Center.

Failed to explain bookkeeping.

Don't waste your money on this book. There are much better explanations of bookkeeping available on the internet for free. Try googling "double entry bookkeeping tutorial".
The primary reason I bought this book was to understand double entry bookkeeping: debits, credits, ledgers, journals, etc.
Unfortunately, while the book addresses these topics, it does not explain them. For example, for debits & credits the best the author can do is print a table and basically ask the reader to memorize it. I don't want to memorize stuff. I want to understand the logic behind a system so that I can figure the details out on my own.
The author also spends a lot of time explaining the process of closing the books at the end of an accounting period. She makes it sound so onerous and complicated that any reasonable person would conclude that it is better to just hire an accountant. Maybe the author is an accountant trying to drum up business?
Another complaint I have with the book is that every example the author uses to illustrate bookkeeping involves a retail store. I bet most small businesses are not retail stores. The principles of accounting are basic, they apply to retail stores, service businesses, non-profits, governments, households. How about a variety of examples to show how the system works for these various types of entities?

I am a Business Manager and I have read this book myself. I think it is an essential guide for anyone who is apart of a bookkeeping staff. It is a really good book that has the basics of accounting principals, but offers more information on supporting Accountants or Accounting Pros. I have given this book to others who are in Accounts Payable or Receivable positions or those who may want to understand their own personal financials. I highlighted throughout the book. Sometimes you forget the foundation to accounting and finance is bookkeeping. I found it to be a nice refresher/reminder. Worth the $$$

About the Author
Dr. Kouichi Matsuda has a broad background in user interface and user experience design and its application to novel multimedia products. His work has taken him from product development, through research, and back to development, having spent time at NEC, Sony Corporate Research, and Sony Computer Science Laboratories. He is currently a chief distinguished researcher focused on user experience and human computer interaction across a range of consumer electronics. He was the designer of the social 3D virtual world called “PAW” (personal agent-oriented virtual world), was involved in the development of the VRML97 (ISO/IEC 14772-1:1997) standard from the start, and has remained active in both VRML and X3D communities (precursors to WebGL). He has written 15 books on computer technologies and translated a further 25 into Japanese. His expertise covers user experiences, user interface, human computer interaction, natural language understanding, entertainment-oriented network services, and interface agent systems. Always on the lookout for new and exciting possibilities in the technology space, he combines his professional life with a love of hot springs, sea in summer, wines, and MANGA (at which he dabbles in drawing and illustrations). He received his Ph.D. (Engineering) from the Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo.

Dr. Rodger Lea is an adjunct professor with the Media and Graphics Interdisciplinary Centre at the University of British Columbia, with an interest in systems aspects of multimedia and distributed computing. With more than 20 years of experience leading research groups in both academic and industrial settings, he has worked on early versions of shared 3D worlds, helped define VRML97, developed multimedia operating systems, prototyped interactive digital TV, and led developments on multimedia home networking standards. He has published more than 60 research papers and three books, and he holds 12 patents. His current research explores the growing "Internet of Things," but he retains a passion for all things media and graphics.

A good inroad into a strange land

WebGL is a strange place, with bits of DNA from OpenGL ES, GLSL, JavaScript, HTML5 and slight odor of past explorations like VRML and X3D. The runtime environment is strange, a powerful low-level language (GLSL) that runs inside of a high-level sandbox (browser JavaScript). Adding to the learning curve is the fact that WebGL is based on OpenGL ES, a lean, mean API that forgoes all the training wheels of legacy OpenGL like predefined modelview and projection matrices and fixed function pipelines. The result is a landscape both beautiful, and frightening for a beginner.

In this far-off land, WebGL Programming Guide is going to be your map and survival manual. It starts by showing you the bridge between the safe realms of HTML5 and JavaScript and the wilds of WebGL, with simple 2D drawing examples that mimic the HTML5 Canvas. From there it leaps into the jungle, teaching shaders, uniforms and textures, browser event handling, buffer objects, matrices, transforms and animation, views and lighting.

The number of disparate technologies to get under your belt to master WebGL is formidable (though they are C-style languages, JavaScript and GLSL couldn't be more dissimilar) and this book takes you firmly by the hand and leads you over the obstacles and away from the dead-ends to show you how to succeed with WebGL. The writing is good, neither too verbose or concise. The code is tight and elegant, relying on libraries and abstraction layers early on to not overwhelm you with a wall of code, and then peeling back the layers in more advanced chapters to show how everything works and let you take the reins manually if you choose.

At 516 pages, it's as big as it could reasonably be and not outgrow its purpose. There's certainly room for more advanced material in future volumes, but even here we manage to get some chapters on managing hierarchical motion, picking, HUDs, layering WebGL with other in-page content, blending, fog, FBOs and render-to-texture, shadow mapping and basic object loading.

I'd recommend this book for anyone wanting to move from web technologies or desktop OpenGL into WebGL. It assumes very little, and can get you going immediately with the rapid development environment made possible by having your 3D environment built right into your browser. No compile-link-run here, just edit and hit F5 to refresh.

Very Good Pedagogy for a Tough Language

WebGL is here to stay, as its unique architecture (accessing the user's GPU (for its shader, for example) and running on the client side) makes it ideal for embedded chips and mobile, as well as browsers. Google Maps runs in WebGL, and both Autodesk's early support with Maya WebGL interfaces, and now their cloud servers which port all their applications to the cloud via WebGL portend well for learning this challenging language.

If you're already an OpenGL Jock (both programs are from the Khronos Group, with a Mozilla pedigree), it will help a lot. Whenever an API accesses the GPU it doesn't bode well for user friendly programming! Since its beta debut in 2009 a lot of "easier" spins have appeared, most especially Three dot js. Both are obviously JavaScript API's, and there are about 20 others vying to help with the GPU coding. Since the technology doesn't require plug ins and bytecode, but uses the user's power, it is ideal for any device with a decent GPU platform, and nearly all browsers now support it natively (although IE's prior to Windows 8.1 do require a plug in).

Although building and animating with WebGL's ide is a pain, the nice thing is that it supports Maya, Blender, etc. and you can seamlessly import your creations. With Flash no longer being supported, and HTML5/Canvas skyrocketing, WebGL is becoming a very hot "go to" platform for 3D. The "feel" is a lot like OpenGL (and in fact you need it to code in WebGL) and the commands sport a blend of imperative and functional. The forums say there is a lot of support for concurrent/parallel built in and coming, but I am skeptical at this writing.

For a new book, the code is pretty clean, with only minor punctuation rather than syntax errors. Kindle works quite well with this title, and the code resources are simply awesome. If there was one reason to buy this book-- the snippets themselves are worth the investment. However, if you haven't yet decided if this is a language you want to learn, I wouldn't be quick to jump in. If you are already very good at JavaScript with SOME OpenGL (beginner to intermediate), this would be worth it for your career or art due to the "Flash vacuum" and architecture. Both mobile and other embedded is extremely supercharged right now, and if you want your games and apps to run on Android, this platform is not easy, but worth the work.

In addition to the GPU coding issues, this API does not support matrix math like OpenGL. This is thrown into your ballpark via the scripting space (which is why I keep harping on your JavaScript background). The authors cover this problem (as well as the GPU techniques) very thoroughly, and this is as good a reference as a learning tool. Adding a glMatrix type library helps the matrix issue a lot. On the positive side "mixing" coding with libraries (eg JavaScript libraries for the missing GPU links and matrices), HTML, page elements, and even Canvas, is fast and seamless once you gain the tricks from this text or web tutorials. If you've used Inka3D with Maya, you know how powerful and fast WebGL can be for executing even memory-hogging Maya graphics in a way that doesn't slow down even older browsers and will run on chips and smartphones. A Unity interface also is in the rumor mill at this writing.

Tough language (not that OpenGL is easy either!), outstanding text and reference, must have if you have or will commit to this API. I've read 4 books and numerous web tutorials on WebGL, and this is by far the most complete and real world of any of them-- I began using the code snippets immediately. I am a game developer and coder at Shader Joes, but work more on the streaming than HTML- Canvas side, but do work with Maya all day, and all of us have SOME web requests, right? Implementations I've seen are pretty awesome given the amount of RAM they take to develop initially in Blender, for example, then when exported don't cause the browser to snail out like some of my streams do!

Learning the Basics

Coming from a Javascript / Actionscript background the world of raw webGL was really confusing at first. I read a lot of different tutorials online and could get things working, but I didn't really understand what all of the commands were doing. This book really broke it down for me and let me actually understand what was happening. I finished the book and found myself wanting more. I could say that I wish the book covered more, but I actually think it's great that it doesn't bite off more than it can chew. Since finishing this book I've been able to move onto much more complicated books that would have previously been unapproachable.

If you are already familiar with openGL and 3d graphics then this book will probably be mostly recap. If you're just looking to create pretty 3d then I'd grab a book that gets you up and running with ThreeJS which will do the heavy lifting for you. If you already understand javascript and want to get into raw webGL then I'd say this is a great place to start.
