About the Author
Frédéric Jiguet is one of France's leading ornithologists and a conservation biologist at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris. He is director of the Centre de Recherches sur la Biologie des Populations d'Oiseaux (CRBPO), and serves on the editorial board of France's premier bird-study journal, Ornithos. Aurélien Audevard has been studying birds for much of his life and has conducted several high-profile conservation studies for the Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur (LPO PACA). His photographs have appeared in many of Europe's leading birding magazines, including Ornithos, L'Oiseaux, Birding World, and Dutch Birding.

Hunting the Shadow. By Geoff Thompson

Carl Jung wrote about shadows and described them as part of the unconscious mind consisting of repressed weaknesses, shortcomings, and instincts. He also said: `Everyone carries a shadow," and the less it is embodied in the individual's conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.

There is a movie called `Legend of Earthsea', based on the Earthsea books by `Ursula Le Guin', which tells about a young wizard Ged who after using a dangerous spell releases an evil shadow spirit. Throughout the first part of the movie he runs from it while being hunted and almost killed by the spirit. After being saved by his old mentor, the mentor advices him to own the spirit where after Ged hunts the spirit. At the end Ged realises that this spirit is his very own shadow-self the dark part of himself. He names the shadow and thereby dissolves it.

Geoff Thompson, before he was a writer of about 40 books, a filmmaker, a personal growth guru, world famous martial art and self-defence instructor, he was a depressed young man with many shadows. One day he decided to change his life and started to overcome his shadows by facing his fears one by one until he had to face his biggest fear; violent confrontation. This led him to become a doorman in Coventry's most violent nightclubs for nine years.

Within the pages of 10 easy to read chapters Geoff shows you how he overcame his shadows and how you can do the same with yours. The book starts with a nice poem about fear by Hafiz, the author of `The prophet' and a phrase from the `Bhagavad Gita', the holy book of the Hindu's. The book explains about what shadow is, how to recognise, how to hunt and how to dissolve the shadow.

Eventually we learn to recognise those fears as energy and learn to put it use to create great things. Hence the second part of the title; How to turn Fear into Massive Success.

I highly recommend this book to anyone prepared to make the leap of fate and live a courageous life.

About the Author
Carla Larese Riga received her Master of Arts from Stanford University and has worked toward a PhD at the University of California, Berkley. She has over 30 years of experience as a dedicated professor of Italian at various institutions, including Santa Clara University, Stanford University, Foothill College, and De Anza College. She is a scholar of romance languages and is fluent in Italian, French, and Spanish.

Irene Bubula-Phillips was born and raised in Italy. She graduated from the University of Trieste with a laureate in modern languages (Spanish and English) and an emphasis on literary translation. After moving to California, she received her MA in Spanish from San Jose State University. She has been teaching Italian and Spanish at Santa Clara since 1996. Ms. Bubula-Phillips is passionate about teaching and sharing her interest in languages and cultures with the students at Santa Clara University.

Gr 3-5-"Portugese explorers named this sea `The Sea of Grapes' when they saw the fields of seaweed full of golden global shapes." These globes and leaves of seaweed fill several blue expanses in this poetic introduction to the Sargasso Sea, best known to children for that segment of it called the Bermuda Triangle. Heller's rhythmic, rhyming commentary on the history, geography, and animals of this "sea within an ocean" emphasizes scary aspects. Sea creatures show their terrible teeth and swallow ships and humans in the more dramatic views. Double-page spreads feature gold or tan fierce fish that blend with the seaweed and others of the black inky ocean bottom with fish outlined in white and shaded in rusty pastels. From fanciful views of brightly colored sailing vessels to a final cartoon view of a gentleman savoring a plate of eels, this is a quick pass over sunken ships, repeated masses of seaweed, and monstrous and more benign animals. There's only the barest reference to the mysterious disappearance of ships and planes, and no concluding notes are offered to expand the minimal information. Broadly sketched maps on the first and last pages show the location of the Sargasso Sea and the Bermuda Triangle. About the Author
After receiving a fine arts degree from the University of California at Berkeley and completing two years of graduate work in design at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, Ruth Heller (1923-2004) began her career designing wrapping paper, cocktail napkins, greeting cards, and coloring books. After five years of rejection and one complete revision, Heller's first book,�Chickens Aren't the Only Ones, about egg-laying animals, was published in 1981. It was so successful that the sequel, and second book to be published,�Animals Born Alive And Well�(1982), about mammals, quickly followed. In 1983 and 1984, her third and fourth titles,�The Reason For A Flower�(about plants that have seeds and flowers) and�Plants That Never Ever Bloom�(about plants that do not) were published.

She then began work on a collection of six books, the�How To Hide�series on camouflage and the magic of this phenomenon in nature, which covered the entire animal kingdom -- insects, birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, and sea creatures. The next collection of books became a five-volume series on parts of speech:�A Cache of Jewels and Other Collective Nouns; Kites Sail High: A Book About Verbs; Many Luscious Lollipops: A Book About Adjectives; Merry-Go-Round: A Book About Nouns;�and�Up, Up and Away: A Book About Adverbs. She also wrote and illustrated the unique and fascinating book�Color, a charming and instructive guide to how art goes through the four color printing process.

Among the notable people who have had an influence on Heller's writing have been: Ogden Nash, Gilbert and Sullivan, Edward Lear, Hilaire Belloc, and Dr. Seuss. Heller says of her work, "All my books are nonfiction picture books in rhyme. I find writing in rhyme enjoyable and challenging, and I think it is an easy way for children to learn new facts and acquire a sophisticated vocabulary. Children are not intimidated by big words. I try to make my writing succinct and allow the illustrations to convey as much information as possible."

captures the mystery of the sea

Our family loves this book. My son asks for it a lot, and adults and children alike enjoy reading it in our house. My son, age 4, has a serious interest in all things having to do with the ocean (sharks, fish, whales, etc.), and this book is a great addition to his collection. What is nice about it is that it captures both the fantasy aspect of the ocean (sea monsters, for instance), while also showing us some scientific facts (about the famed Sargasso Sea and its' inhabitants). I actually learned quite a bit that I didn't know about the Sargasso while reading it.

I have no idea what that other reviewer is talking about when he/she critiques the book's color. The artwork in this book is beautiful, and is quite colorful. I think some people seem to expect some sort of garish Disney-like experience all the time or something. There is a definite color scheme in the book - golds, blues, and a few touches of red, but that creates a certain mood (and is probably more true to this area of ocean). It's a fun challenge on some pages to have your child find the sea creatures in among the seaweed.

And finally, this book is well-written. The words are in the form of poetry, which makes it a good option for poetry study with your child. I've read some books for children that have irritating, forced poetry. This book is not irritating at all, and is actually quite beautiful.

About the Author

Author #1:

After earning his doctorate in experimental psychology at the University of New Mexico in 1971, Dr. Grilly spent the next two years investigating the behavioral effects of cannabinoids after acute and chronic exposure in chimpanzees at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, New Mexico.� He then moved to Cleveland, Ohio, to take a position as a faculty member in the Psychology Department at Cleveland State University, where he spent the remainder of his 38 year career.� His research at CSU, primarily with rats, involved investigations of a variety of psychoactive drugs on a variety of behaviors.� These included investigating the potential use of signal detection theory in assessing �nociception and opiate withdrawal, determining the effects of drugs �on attentional processes (e.g., naltrexone, diprenorphine, morphine, barbiturates, amphetamine, cocaine, fluoxetine, nicotine, pemoline) and conditioned avoidance/escape behavior (e.g., clonidine, chlorpromazine, morphine), determining whether the effects of psychostimulants (e.g., cocaine, amphetamine) on sustained attention change with aging, and comparing the effects of very low to very high doses of amphetamine in rats with those shown in humans.� He also conducted research with humans investigating the effect of marijuana on visual short term memory and the changes in people’s perceptions of the effects of marijuana on driving.�

Author #2: Dr. John Salamone received his bachelor's degree from Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Missouri in 1978. He was a psychology major and biology minor.� Dr. Salamone then entered the psychobiology program at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated with a Ph.D. in 1982.� For postdoctoral training, Dr. Salamone received a National Science Foundation grant, and studied at Cambridge University in England. Dr. Salamone stayed in England for several more years, working at Merck, Sharpe and Dohme pharmaceutical laboratories. Upon returning to the United States, Dr. Salamone joined the Behavioral Neuroscience department at the�University of Pittsburgh in 1986, and joined the Psychology Department at UConn in the fall of 1988. Dr. Salamone is now a Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor; he also is the chair of the Interdisciplinary Program in Neuroscience, and the head of the Behavioral Neuroscience Division of the Psychology Department. Dr. Salamone's research is largely in the fields of behavioral neuroscience and psychopharmacology, with an emphasis on studies related to Parkinson’s disease, depression, motivation, and effort-related decision making. Dr. Salamone has been the research advisor for more than 40 undergraduate honors students at the University of Connecticut. He was inducted as a member of the Connecticut Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2002, and he has received the University of Connecticut Alumni Association Award for Excellence in Teaching. His daughter, Isabella Salamone, is currently an honor student studying biology at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Salamone’s hobbies include travel, astronomy, book collecting and cooking.

Excellent resource from neuro psych grad education to med school

I used this book in my psychopharmacology course in grad school and it gave me an excellent insight into the pharmacokinetic aspects of psychotropic drugs. I have found that, even after starting medical school, this is a book that I use over traditional pharmacology texts for drugs related to psychiatric disorders, those used for epilepsy, and opioid drugs.

The book begins with an introduction to neurotransmitters and their common functions in the CNS. There are separate chapters for each class of psychotropic drug: antipsychotics, antidepressants, antiepileptics, opioids, ETOH, cannabinoids, dissociative anesthetics, and others that I am sure I am forgetting. Each chapter includes the history of the drug, mechanisms of action, pharmacokineitics and pharmacodynamics.

Amazing book but not a nice layout

I have to read this for my Psychopharmacology class. It's an amazing book and I plan on re-reading it in the summer. It covers everything you need to know about how drugs interact with your body. For instance, I didn't know that we had a Blood Brain Barrier, and I didn't know that ANY drug can pass through the placenta into the fetus. It's an amazing book. I took off a star because of they layout. It's just really crammed tight and doesn't hold my interest. I understand there's so much information but it's a bit overwhelming with the way they have the book format everything.
