The driving force behind Operation Paperclip revealed.

My father was a member of British Intelligence following World War II -- and so I was aware of T-force as a child (and totally unaware that it was still a national secret at the time). As a result, much of what I read in Longden's revealing book about the exploits of T-force was familiar to me. Like the "Monuments men" here is a story of amazing feats of bravery by special British and American forces whose job it was to grab technical data and scientists from under the noses of the Russians as part of "Operation Paperclip." Longden's account is a fascinating read - accurate - and provides yet another glimpse into a long secret part of the post war efforts of the Allies to advance science and technology in the West ahead of the Russians. The full nature and extent of Nazi Germany's incredible technological advances has yet to be told - but here is a great look at the thin end of the wedge. Incidentally, author Jack Rees relates a truthful account of two T-force operations in his fictional book "The Watch," which explores the more bizarre elements of Nazi technology and time experiments.

Disapointingly British

A good editor could cut half from this book without taking out any information, and it would be a far better book. Way too much repetition, but there is little else available on this fascinating bit of WWII history, so something is better than nothing.

As the son of a T-Force vet from the US Army, I was very disappointed that this book is so obstinately British. It is written as if the US Army barely existed, with almost no mention of the T-Force units in the US Army which were just as active, and possibly better behaved than the British units. Ironically, one of the very few sentences mentioning US soldiers is of Captain Kraus, who I can confirm from my fathers photo album as Captain Will Kraus from Cleveland, who entered T-Force as an interpreter about the same time my father did.

My father also made it clear that serving on T-Force was a good deal less heroic than being a regular infantryman. It was important and interesting work, but they were pulled back from the fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, and suffered much lower casualties than an average front line infantry group.

Last soldiers of World War II and first fighters of Cold War

I am glad that I bought and read this book, but I can not rate it five stars for reasons explained more in detail below.

This book tells the story of a small specialized - and rather discreet - unit of British Army charged during World War II with gathering intelligence about enemy technology. It was first created in 1941 as Special Intelligence Unit, at the initiative of a certain Commander Ian Fleming (who would later write James Bond books), in this time an officer in Directorate of Naval Intelligence of British Admiralty. In 1942 it was renamed 30 RN Commando, before becoming 30 Assault Unit in 1943.

In 1944, after the success of Normandy landings, this unit was greatly increased in numbers and renamed once again, becoming the T-Force. Its task was to "identify, secure, guard and exploit valuable and special information, including documents, equipment and persons of value to the Allied armies". Once the allies broke the Rhine barrier in 1945, T-Force units became suddenly a very important part of allied war effort, as they were charged not only with gathering intelligence but also PREVENTING valuable German technology, documentation and personel from being seized by Soviets. Therefore, from April 1945 until well into 1946, those soldiers were waging in the same time the last battle of World War II and the first fight of Cold War...

Sean Longden book is VERY well researched and full of valuable information, some of it published for the first time. I learned a lot from it and I am glad that I bought and read it. Sadly, I must say that the writing and organisation of this book are NOT AS EXCELLENT as author's research. It is not a very long book, but still I had to struggle a lot to read it all and it took me forever to finally munch through it. This is the reason why I take away one star from. If you want to read this book, attack it when you have some extended free time available, because it is not an easy read and it REALLY takes a moment to arrive to the end.

But still, it is a valuable thing, about a topic left almost completely untreated until now. Recommended to all those interest by World War II, Cold War and intelligence services in general.

Three Hounds

It is rumored that the Civil Rights hero, Martin Luther King Jr., carried in his pocket a copy of Howard Thurman’s “Jesus and the Disinherited.” Rumors or nay, the similarities between these two magnanimous Christians and their Christo-love-centricism are undeniable. Thurman, a highly educated lawyer who bravely trail-blazed key civil rights cases, unveils the true “religion of Jesus.” Jesus was a Jew. A poor Jew. A poor, minority Jew under the Roman Empire. Jesus stands with the disinherited because he was one of them. So what does this disinherited Jesus teach and preach? The need for a profound “inward center” transformation. Both the oppressors and the oppressed cannot allow fear, deception, or hate to define and propagandize the self over and against the other; only love must stand it their stead.

Here Thurman’s summation of Jesus’ life and teachings: “You must abandon your fear of each other and fear only God. You must not indulge in any deception and dishonesty, even to save your lives. Your words must be Yea-Nay; anything else is evil. Hatred is destructive to hated and hater like. Love your enemy, that you may be children of your Father who is in heaven.”

Beautiful and Powerful Masterpiece

Howard Thurman is well known as one of the 20th century's great mystics, thinkers, and spiritual leaders. "Jesus and the Disinherited" may be his best known book, and it's certainly his most influential. Martin Luther King, Jr. carried a copy with him in his travels and it grounded him as much as any book. It's certainly worth the accolades.

It's a small book, and its organization is basic. Thurman begins by describing people under oppression as the people "With their backs to the wall." Most of what Christians have written about the role of the teachings of Christ in conversations about oppressed people comes from the perspective of those with power who have an obligation to help those who do not have power. Thurman affirms this approach, and compares it to the perspective of Paul, who, though a Jew and regularly persecuted for the Gospel, always had the power to assert his Roman citizenship. His was a chosen powerlessness, and he occasionally chose to use his societal power.

Jesus, God Incarnate, chose to take his place among those "with their backs to the wall." Thurman believes that Jesus' life and teachings can only be understood from this vantage point. He argues that those who have never been powerless cannot fully understand what it means to have society's structures and systems turned not to their benefit and protection but to their subjugation and humiliation.

Thurman describes how the life and teachings of Jesus relate to the great enemies of the soul--fear, deception, and hate. He is a master not only of the faith but also of psychology and society. The final chapter is about love, and how love between those in power and those with their backs against the wall can only be the result of relationships built on mutuality. He thinks the church is the best place for such relationships to form, and laments that congregations are so segregated and do not allow such relationships to form.

Love is a miracle, and all of society makes the enemies of the soul and the possibility of the love Jesus describes incredibly difficult. One of the great wonders of the Jesus story is that he is a person with his back against the wall who was able to demonstrate the possibility of living in an oppressive situation without giving in to fear, deception, or hate. Jesus was able to love, even his enemies. This fact alone gives tremendous hope that those with their backs against the wall may actually live in such a way. Thurman certainly did.

Howard Thurman wrote in the midst of the Civil Rights struggle, and he talks about his conversations with a grandmother who had spent her childhood in slavery. People like me, who take our freedom and privilege for granted, should read the book, if for no other reason, to get a sense of the interior struggles others face.

Our world is full of fear, deception, and hate. The kind of love Jesus demonstrates and Thurman describes is rare, indeed. This book is a training manual for those who would live in this world with souls untouched by its cruelty.

Not What I Expected

"Pleasure Unwoven: A Study Guide to the Film" led me to expect something more closely keyed to the film, rather than something more in the way of general background with only a few evocative discussion-starter questions. I was hoping for something more pedantic that I could use with substance abuing clients before and after viewing the film.

Not very helpful

I got this to help teach clients and their families how addiction works, as for individuals with limited scientific knowledge, the movie can be overwhelming. (Props to the movie though, it was great.) This didn't offer much written breakdown of the important concepts or any study materials. I expected this to have activities, worksheets, or at least written explanations of the main concepts. There were about 3-4 activities in the book but they did not really illustrate the major concepts. I wanted to use this to help break down a complicated set of ideas to individuals who are beginning their recovery, and have limited cognitive function/attention span due to several years of drug/alcohol use. Especially compared to the movie, I was very disappointed.

I cannot say enough about this film, and the workbook is helpful for giving those visual reminders long after my group has seen the video. This film has set a new high bar by being a more adult level of format, and taking a positive approach to the topic of addiction as a brain disease.

I definitely do NOT recommend this book

I am a huge Heath Ledger fan, but I would not recommend any fan to buy this book. In fact, I would recommend against it as it is clearly meant to exploit his death.

Here are my reasons:

1) It goes off on so many tangents, it feels like a high schooler writing a 500-word essay whose scrambling to fill the requirements. There are literally pages and pages on topics that are only tangentially Heath-related. For example, Heath was born in Perth, so the author gives a two page-synopsis of how the city of Perth was discovered. How does knowing the history of Perth help me learn more about Heath Ledger? The author does this repeatedly in the book on topics such as Perth, Heath's grammar school, The Hospital in which he was born, his various co-stars, etc. To provide another example, there is a chapter that one would assume is going to discuss "the Patriot", a movie of Heath's. Instead of talking about the movie, the author starts the chapter with 2 pages about Mel Gibson's life and career, before even discussing the movie. I understand Mel was the star of the movie, but the book is supposed to be about HEATH, not MEL. I had to remind myself this is a book about HEATH because the author changes gears so many times throughout it. This appears to be a poorly edited book written quickly to capitalize on Heath's untimely, tragic death.

2) Factual errors issues. I am not talking about "rumors" that some could argue about, I mean actual FACTUAL errors that anyone could answer by doing research. Heath's best friend's name is Trevor DiCarlo, the author calls him Tom in the book. There are quite a few examples of this. If the author can't even get the name of Heath's best friend right, how are we to trust any other facts in this book?

3)Although I had seen all of Heath's movies, he spoils many of the plotlines for those who haven't seen them. Furthermore, he made one minor plotline in one of the movies sound larger than it was.

4) Not a single person was interviewed for this book. Every quote that was in there was clearly available to anyone who owns a computer and could look up Heath themselves.

5) Typos. Enough said.

6) Last, but not least. The handling of Heath's death in this book feels like it was written by the National Enquirer. He exploits every rumor about Heath and has no issue with bringing up facts that were never confirmed. At times, he brings up ones that have CLEARLY been refuted evidentially with no mention of the new evidence. For example, initial reports said "pills were strewn" but the NYC Police Commissioner made a public TV interview saying that was absolutely NOT true. The author is perpetuating a rumor that was PROVEN to be NOT true. Had he done his research properly, he would have learned that many of those initial rumors were proven to be false.

Any true Heath fan is better off not buying this book as it was clearly written to capitalize on his death.

Useless Reguritation

If you've read the articles and/or on line interviews or clicked around on youtube, there is nothing new here whatsoever. It is a reprint basically of everything already in print. Some sections, if the quotes were similar in two different interviews, the author repeats the same story and redunant quotes, as if we didn't just learn this 5 seconds ago in the previous paragraph. Poor editing and thoughtless. This author did not interview anyone for this book. There are no first hand accounts of anything. Rumors printed in the press are repeated here with no basis for fact or further investigation given to them. There are no insights into who was Heath Ledger. No gained understanding of the man. Anyone with the internet could have written this book and slammed it out in a few weeks. "Mysterious death"? Gee what a compelling and misleading title. There's no mystery. The man accidentally OD'd and anyone with a TV or magazine knows this and no new information is presented here. This book is exploitive, opportunistic and pathetic.

I'd give it negative if I could.

This book was put up for "pre-order" on Amazon less than 2 weeks after Heath's tragic passing. At that time, his final medical examiner's report had not even been released. That should tell you right there the kind of cr*p that it's spewing: the rumors, innuendo and speculation that the gossip columns dragged out from 2006 and earlier, youthful indiscretions that he had long put behind him and grown past, and which did not represent who he was. These rumors and gossip were disputed and proven incorrect, not to mention being technically libelous.

At the time of his loss, Heath was looking forward to so much. He was sober, responsible, focused and so excited about branching out in new directions. Although he had battled insomnia his entire life, according to the medical examiner's report, Heath was being responsible with his medications. The report states: "LEDGER HAD TAKEN ONLY THE PRESCRIBED THERAPEUTIC DOSES OR LESS OF HIS PRESCRIPTIONS." (ABC News)

Mixing the wrong prescriptions is a horrible tragedy that happens to over 100,000 people in the U.S. every year. Not much could make the loss of such a beautiful soul more tragic, except the vultures who jumped to ruin his reputation, hurt those who loved him, and exploit inaccurate gossip for profit.

I was fortunate to have some small contact with Heath as we knew of each other through mutual acquaintances. I still sometimes sit down at the computer and wish I'd find a message. . . Those who love him will never stop mourning the loss of someone who was so good, such a light in the lives of all he touched, and more brilliant than anyone ever realized. It hurts that so many cannot understand that about him.

If you are searching for answers, or trying to know Heath better, this is not the book you want. This book is so inaccurate, it would be laughable if it did not tarnish the legacy of a genuinely kind and gentle man who had a heart of gold.

Don't. I repeat don't waste your money.

This book was a complete waste of money (a lot of it too!) the exercises in the book are not clearly lined out, they provide minimal visuals so if you are new to the program you are left wondering what the heck they are talking about and where it might be. Then the exercises are left half done and they say, "So we will leave you here." Really? you don't even get to see the project to completion? Yes. They show you how great it will look when it is finished and then they don't even show you how to finish it. Also when I try to use the download files from their website they have an error in the program due to a "missing plugin." What a waste of time and money. You are better off looking up tutorials on youtube.

Lackluster exercises but overall satisfactory

As of this review I am about halfway through this book. Overall, several of the exercises feel satisfactory, but this book feels heavily lacking in proofreading and polish.

The modeling chapters start off very rocky and there are a few errors in the exercises, as well as steps that have obviously been skipped (especially in the clock modeling exercise, there is an obvious change in the accompanying images that is never mentioned once in the exercise steps)

The book picks up a bit later but it still feels very mediocre. I can not say that I would recommend this book very highly, especially when Autodesk offers FREE tutorials on their website that are of the same quality or better than what is presented here. The animation chapters are a real mess.

Then there's the exercise files. The exercise files are, for lack of a nicer word, incomplete. The exercise files for the very first exercise are missing images needed for the exercise. They just aren't there at all. Despite this, once you get further into the book the exercises seem to sharply increase in quality-- I am working through the Character Modeling sections right now and they are extremely well-written

Overall I feel like this is a *satisfactory* resource for beginners or low-intermediate 3DS Max users to pick up a few tips. However, be prepared to work through some lackluster exercises; if you like solving problems you will probably enjoy this book.

When is part 3 coming out? I had to read book 1 first and was not able to put it down, I expected the same from book 2. I have to say I was NOT disappointed. OMG, this is a must read (be sure to read Book 1 first). I can not wait until the next one.

Great Book.

Rico and Terrie they make a good couple thou he put her through hell but she love him and Rico love her. Saiid and his Women he was so crazy he had me laughing he finally meet his match wit Dee Dee. Treshe was a trip she was off the chain she was in luv wit Rasim he lie to her so many times to one day she follow him n find out where he been spending his time wit another woman she saw he came out the house holding a baby boy looks just like him well dam. She lost it broke the Windows out of his n her car n truck wit a bat n pour gasoline on them a lite a match n sit them on fire. the house had smoke inside of it wit the baby in there. So much drama in book two had me on edge I can't wait to read the next book now that Terrie is kidnap and Rio needs to make amends wit his fine daddy we all make mistakes nobody's perfect hopefully in due time he forgive his father. So ready for book 3 love me so Rico and Saiid.

Poorly bound Bible!

I preordered this Bible, having a love of illustrated Bibles. I also typically don't mind imitation leather. The Bible I pre-ordered was poorly bound, unattached to the outer binding at the spine. So I sent it back for a replacement. The replacement was worse, again with the pages not attached to the outer binding at the spine but only to what looks like a backing to which they are glued. In addition, 1/4" of the first pages were not attached to even that binding--just glued to the inner cover. I haven't gotten past the poor quality binding to really study the Bible itself. This is only a review of the quality of the physical book, which seems to be so poor that studying the Bible would make it fall apart.

Wonderful Bible! Of course, the Word of God is indescribably wonderful. This Bible was purchased for my granddaughter but once we saw the wonderful illustrations we purchased three more grandchildren and ourselves.
