3.75 stars---DARE TO SEDUCE is the eight installment and latest novella in Carly Phillips contemporary adult DARE TO LOVE erotic romance series focusing on the Dare cousins and siblings. This is Lucy Dare –one of the New York Dare cousins, and professional chef and restaurateur Max Savage’s storyline. DARE TO SEDUCE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. We were first introduced to the Dare cousins in Dare To Surrender (Dare to Love #3)-the July 2014 installment in the multi-authored 1001 Dark Nights novella series- and Dare to Submit (Dare to Love #4).

Told from dual third person perspectives (Lucy and Max) DARE TO SEDUCE is a friends to lovers/second chance storyline that focuses on the building relationship between Lucy and Max. Max has always loved Lucy, but growing up neighbors and best friends with Lucy’s brothers there was always an understood hands-off policy between Lucy and Max. But years passed, lives changed, losses and other relationships carried forward until present day where Lucy and Max found themselves together at Decklan Dare’s engagement party to Amanda Collins (Dare to Love #4), wherein Lucy’s current boyfriend found himself on the outside looking in when Max and Lucy rekindled their long fought urges and need for one another. What ensues is the building relationship between Lucy and Max, and Lucy’s need to push Max away at every available opportunity.

DARE TO SEDUCE is an erotic storyline; a tale about two people who have loved one another but never took a chance on a happily ever after. Lucy had already lost too many people in her life, and wasn’t willing to risk her heart for fear of losing the only man she has ever loved. Max is a man whose childhood left our hero longing for a relationship with a woman he could love but Lucy kept Max at arm’s length as their relationship began to grow. Saying that, I felt the love between Lucy and Max was more one-sided –Lucy’s inability to let go of the past pushed everyone (including family and friends) to the periphery of her relationship needs. The $ex scenes are erotic and intense. Max likes to dominate both in and out of the bedroom.

The secondary and supporting characters include Lucy’s brothers and their respective mates: Gabe and Isabelle; Decklan and Amanda. We are also introduced to Max’s new business partner and executive chef Sebastian Del Toro; as well as Max’s parents who want to rekindle their relationship with their only son.

DARE TO SEDUCE is a quick and enjoyable read that takes the reader into the world of the ‘other’ Dare family: the cousins to the original Dare to Love series family; and the Dare’s who are members of an elite BDSM club and the Club Eden hotel and nightclub chain. The premise is entertaining; the characters have a history together therefore the build up to love is quick but not necessarily easy; the happily ever after fast forwards the storyline one year wherein Lucy and Max are in need of an extended vacation and some time away. Carly Phillips DARE TO LOVE series is a delight-no matter which side of the family you’re on !!

Max and Lucy will really have you turning those pages to find out what happens. Lucy has totally closed off her heart. She has been in love with Max since they were next door neighbors and she was a kid. When he went and got married he broke her heart. She wouldn't even go to their wedding. He never knew the feelings she had for him. To protect her heart from any kind of hurt she moved clear across the country. She was fine until she came home with her boyfriend for her brothers wedding. There she encountered Max and her life was changed.

Max was best friends with both of Lucy's brothers. He lived next door to them growing up and Lucy was always their bratty little sister. Then she came home from college and he realized she wasn't so little any more and he developed feelings for her. But he knew about that unspoken code of never dating your best friends sister. That made her off limits. So he pushed on never revealing his feelings for her to anyone. During their time apart his wife had passed away and he lived life one day at a time....never getting serious with anyone. Then he saw Lucy at her brothers wedding and his life was changed.

Dare to Seduce tells us the tale of their mostly rocky road to happiness. Here we have two people who love each other but have walls so high and so thick around their hearts it will really take time and work to break them down. Only Carly Phillips can tell their story as well as she has. She can make you feel all the pain and frustration they are going through and then make you cheer when things work out.

Never hesitate to read a book by Carly Phillips as she will definitely keep you turning those pages until you reach their happily ever after.

Overall another great addition to the Dare series!

I just adore Carly Phillips' Dare series. Ian and Gabe have been my favorites. Well, I think Max Savage is giving them a run for their money! His name alone exudes sex!

Max has longed for little Lucy Dare ever since she had come home from college. Unfortunately, Max figured Lucy's brothers, Gabe and Decklan would have a huge problem with him wanting to be with Lucy so he never pursued anything. Over the next few years, Lucy moved to California for work, while Max ended up marrying Cindy, who was killed in a car accident 4 years later. Neither of them were very happy. Now that Lucy is back in town for Decklan's wedding, Max finally gets her brother's blessing and he decides to make his move. He doesn't care if she brought some guy with her from California.

I loved the way Max kept working on Lucy to convince her that he really had feelings for her and wasn't just looking for sex. I just adored how sweet and thoughtful he was, while at the same time being a typical cocky, alpha male! Their time on the island of Eden was wonderful and sexy...really sexy! ;)

I enjoyed how they worked together to open up a new restaurant Savage in Soho (great name), and really enjoyed the character of Sabastian, the chef he hired. He was a hoot! Too bad he isn't a Dare...I bet he'd have a great story!

Overall another great addition to the Dare series!

Clear and well structured

As a Java developer I've been using plenty of web frameworks over recent years. Every single of them was either using JSP, or was built on the top of Servlets or at least required some configuration in deployment descriptor. Even though I felt quite productive, there have always been present these little things that kept bothering me. If you often happen to see stack traces ending somewhere in servlet classes you know what I am talking about. After some time I realized that it might be good idea to dive into the basics and try to understand the pillar stones of the specification that many frameworks utilize. So I got this book.

The book is extremely well structured and the order of chapters makes perfect sense. Each chapter starts with gentle introduction to the problem, properly describes the most important use cases of the core components and ends up with fine-grained details that you might refer to in the future. Chapters have very reasonable length and provided examples are clear. With correct zoom even the Kindle version has proper formatting, which seems (unfortunately) kinda rare in tech books.

The only thing that was disturbing me was that author was using fully-qualified class names in API descriptions, even for java.lang.String or java.util.List. But overall impression of the book was very good so I easily forgave author this little annoyance and focused on the content instead.

Fulfills its mission

Well I've read most of this book already, it has been an easy reading, the author explains things in an easy way and gives easy to folllow examples. To be able to follow the examples you must already know core java programming since the author does not goes to the explanation of java language. This is a good starting point to learn JSP/servlets though the examples could have been more practical if the author had ncluded database programming earlier in the book. But the chapter 10 which is a recap of all previous learning and applying it to a more complete application is very good. I have not read the chapters on file download/upload yet but I expect them to add practicality to the book examples.

I found this book excellent. I liked the title, because it informs the purchaser exactly what the book contains, making my purchase decision really easy. This book was exactly what i needed to get up to speed in servlet technologies. The examples were instructive, and followed each other progressively. The text was clear and quite well written. You need some understanding of java to understand this book. A minor gripe that there were some typos in the text, and the code samples weren't well formatted in the ebook, making them difficult to read.

About the Author
Professor Russell Napier is the author of the Solid Ground investment report and co-founder of the investment research portal ERIC (www.eri-c.com). Russell has worked in the investment business for 25 years and has been writing global macro strategy for institutional investors since 1995. Russell is founder and course director of the Practical History of Financial Markets at the Edinburgh Business School. Russell serves on the boards of two listed companies and is a member of the investment advisory committees of three fund management companies. In 2014 he founded the Library of Mistakes, a business and financial history library in Edinburgh. Russell has degrees in law from Queen’s University Belfast and Magdalene College, Cambridge, and is a Fellow of The CFA Society of the UK and an Honorary Professor at Heriot-Watt University.

No crystal ball, but still worth reading (more than once)

This is a fascinating book that bears (har har!) repetitive readings. Originally published by CLSA in 2005, it saw a second addition in 2007, a third edition in 2009 by Harriman House and is in its 4th printing again under Harriman House in 2016.

Napier studies the great US bear markets which bottomed in 1921, 1932, 1949 and 1982. The "current" bear market at time of original publication was the Tech Bubble crash of 2000 which was ongoing in 2005 when the book was first published. More on that in a moment. Like any historical work, Napier is forced to create a theory from other logical considerations and then selectively apply it by choosing meaningful historical data to interpret through the lens of his chosen theory. There is risk in both having a poorly calibrated logical apparatus for explaining cause-effect relationships and in mischoosing or mishandling chosen data and leading oneself to faulty conclusions as a result. I don't wish to comment on whether or not I think Napier's logical framework and chosen data are successfully employed, I wish only to point out that these kind of endeavors are necessarily speculative in nature and can never be as precise as we might like.

The book deserves to be read multiple times in part because it is so dense with data-- numbers, charts, graphs, tables, etc. But also qualitative data, such as descriptions of the structure of the market and economy at each point in time (what were the growth industries? which sectors were most badly bruised? which saw their quantitative data change first or last?), a wealth of newspaper headlines and story clippings from each era that serve as live commentary (think of them as ancient Twitter feeds...) and descriptions of changes in monetary systems and the strategy of prevailing central bank regimes. This is precisely why it's difficult to get a read on the success of Napier's analysis-- it is far from simple and with so many variables to consider there are so many places the analysis could go astray.

That being said, there are so many variables and that is what makes the book fascinating. It is chilling to go back in time and hear the echoes of the past in their various moments. It is surprising to see how often they do seem to "rhyme". And oh, if only one COULD pull a predictive model out of this mess and use it to time the markets! But even stopping short of that, some themes emerge fairly clearly:

1. When things were about to turn, there were many who could see things getting better but few that would give them credit
2. These drastic bear markets were preceded by great instability and uncertainty about the "general price level" as Napier calls it, and only when a consensus formed about the paradigm shift could the bull market return
3. These bear markets took far longer to play out than most remember-- we have the violent, dramatic crashes burned into our collective memory, but most of the time these things took almost a decade to fully play out
4. No matter what, each cycle brought with it statistically extreme valuations of leading shares based on measures such as the Q Ratio and even P/Es and it seems unlikely there will ever be a bear market without such phenomena almost by definition-- people who have the courage to invest in those moments, however far they are from the bottom, are rewarded with great returns in time

So, where are we now, the burning question for today's reader? At the end of the book (written 2005, mind you), Napier suggests the "current" (re: 2000) bear market likely won't bottom until 2009 at the earliest and 2014 more probably. Of course, 2009 was a major low in the market and 2014 saw the continuation of the up trend since then. Are we in the midst of a new bull started in 2009, or do lower lows await from the "ongoing" bear started in 2000?

I really enjoyed this book

I really enjoyed this book as I have only myself experienced 2 stock market crashes and have limited experience investing in those times.

Napier gives a historic review of the great US bear market bottoms and what we can learn from them. I don't imagine timing the market at the bottom, but I think the book gave me tools to recognise conditions in witch I can be more offensive in my investing. What really baffled me was that is not always speculation that goes to boom and then a bust that gives you the undervaluation of equities.

Mind that Napier aint talking about "small bears". He is talking about the great bears of 1921, 1932, 1949 and 1982. And according to this theory 2001 might have been a start on another great bear.

Major Disappointment

I am adding to this review (below is the first review) after using this book many more times. I've made recipes three, four, five times and I've tried some new ones and I gotta say, I still feel the same way about this book. I don't usually get this detailed in reviews, but I'm so tired of spending money on untested recipe books. I just finished mixing up the chocolate chip cookie recipe and even in this one, which should be a no brainer, there are such ridiculous instructions "cut up the room temperature butter in cubes". Why? I feel like making a new ccc recipe and I get to the bottom of the recipe, looking for the oven temp and see this instruction: Wrap up the dough and refrigerate for at least three days. WTF? Who waits three days to bake off cookie dough and who thinks they might want ccc in three days? I tried making the cheddar biscuits and once again they fell flat after baking, into lumps of cheese. If biscuits take so much technique to get high and fluffy, I'll find a better recipe. Again, I think if Shauna moved off of the island and lived on the mainland for a year or two, she'd be embarrassed by some of these instructions and recipes. People are too busy for this cookbook. Also, all the things I wrote below remain the same after more tries.

This book is a huge disappointment. I am a very good baker and have followed Shauna and been baking GF for years. I have made several recipes and it is clear that these recipes were *not* well tested outside of Shauna's kitchen (or the testers didn't feel they could tell her the truth when a recipe was a mess). And mess it is. The Apple Crumb Cake recipe, while tasty, will not possibly fit in an 8 inch pan. You will have batter all over your oven unless you use at least a 9 inch and even that is dicey. The bagel recipe was so far off in the liquid ( a problem in several recipes, namely because if the recipes were tested on the East Coast, outside of an island environment, this would have revealed itself quickly) that they were largely a fail. The Pasty recipe could NOT have been tested, as there is twice as much filling as there is dough. How can measurements be that far off? There was no way to put more filling in each one and the dough is very difficult to handle and the recipe is too small for enough dough for each pasty. This is not a cookbook for beginners and if you are a seasoned cook, take heed. If something looks off, it probably is. Also, in some recipes there are vagaries, like the Gumbo recipe, and then there are obvious directions that don't need to be there. Also, there are not enough photos, especially of the more unknown recipes. Makes no sense. Sadly to say, this is par for the course in these cookbooks being created by home cooks who've had some blog success, not cooking success. A good cookbook should give precise directions and be predictable, which this is not.

I wanted to love this book

I wanted to love this book! The pictures are beautiful and the ideas are great, but the recipes are way too time-consuming and unfortunately not worth the effort. I'm all for putting in the effort for baking projects (I love Test Kitchen's How Can It Be Gluten-Free Books), but after waiting 3 DAYS for cookie dough in the refrigerator, the cookies weren't even that great. The yellow cake recipe is ok. The pizza crust recipe turned out like a cracker. My family also can't eat dairy and a lot of the recipes contain dairy. Hopefully more of the recipes turn out better. I bet the bread is delicious, but I'm intimidated by/don't have time to tend a starter for 5 days before being able to bake the bread.

Poorly written and unnecessary

For some reason I keep expecting the Aherns to produce something worth buying. This time I was fooled by the hype around comfort foods made GF, very compelling since these dishes are often flour-laden. I made the fish tacos right away but they were nothing to write home about. Better recipes can be found online. Then I made the muffins using the all-purpose blend in the book -- they were bland and sunk in the middle. I'll give it two stars instead of one just because the food thus far has actually been edible as opposed to that found in previous books (especially "GFG and the Chef"). Also the photographs are really nice. But ultimately there is just no need for this book. Nicole Hunn of GF on a Shoestring is still the best resource for free, dependable, and sometimes outright magical iterations of traditional comfort foods -- sans the sticky, repetitive, self-satisfied prose of Ms. Ahern. (Despite her many claims that the book was "not about us" she couldn't help but include an overly long and pointless introduction that was, of course, all about them.)

I'll probably try a few more recipes -- some of them do sound good! -- but if they're anything like these two, this book will end up donated to the library. I was most interested in the sourdough recipe but now I'm leery of investing so much flour in something that seems likely to flop. I really just need to learn my lesson with these two, especially with the market saturated in high-quality, dependable GF recipes.

Tl;dr? Skip this one and just use the Googles.

About the Author

Miles Van Pelt (PhD, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) is the Alan Belcher Professor of Old Testament and Biblical Languages at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, where he also serves as Academic Dean. Miles lives in Madison, Mississippi, with his wife, Laurie, and their four children.

Gary D. Pratico (ThD, Harvard Divinity School) is senior professor of Old Testament and Hebrew language at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. He has been teaching Hebrew for more than thirty years and is coauthor with Miles V. Van Pelt of Basics of Basics of Biblical Hebrew (grammar and workbook) and The Vocabulary Guide to Biblical Hebrew.

Well done, but reading is still the best way to build vocabulary

This is a great book and a welcome addition for my library of Biblical Hebrew study aids. It will be beneficial to students (and teachers) of Biblical Hebrew at almost any level of proficiency. It's great for research and reference purposes as well as vocabulary building. As far as building my vocabulary, I think it also helps and is certainly useful, but I personally learn the best through reading. I can read a word in a passage once and remember it because of the context, while I will struggle to remember a word even after running numerous times through my word list. But obviously everyone learns differently and for me reading happens to be the best way to pick up new words and make them stick.

As for the book, the authors provide plenty of lists and ways to organize words to allow for multiple focused approaches to building up Biblical Hebrew vocabulary -- for example a frequency based word list for words appearing at least 10 times, a word list arranged by a common root, lists of nouns, lists of verbs (all verbs alphabetically and arranged by a verb type and stem...), statistical distributions of occurrences, etc.... Although I do wish it had even more list, such as a list of all hapax words for each section of the Tanakh for example, I do realize that it is beyond the scope of this book as intended by the authors. I highly recommend this book.

Great aide to beginner and intermediate hebrew students

I found this book to be exactly what I wanted. Studying Hebrew, I can know all the consonants, vowel marks, cantillation marks, structure, and so on. But if I don't know the vocabulary, I still can't read scripture. This book gives me the most frequently used vocabulary, so I can study, drill, practice those, and be that much quicker to being able to read on my own. Without knowing the vocabulary, Hebrew is just a lot of pretty squiggles. With the index in back, it also doubles as a quick lexicon. I recommend it for anyone beginning their study of Hebrew.
