As a strength coach, Weightlifting coach and professor I have been, and continue to be a part, of barbell sport and barbell training. I fell in love with the barbell when I was 12 years old after my father gave me his old 110lb set and I got my DP bench press. Since then the barbell has been a part of helping me achieve my goals of playing college football, aided in meeting my wife (I met her as a strength coach), is the basis for my income and has provided me an outlet in maintaining my own health and competitive outlet. The barbell has also been the foundation one of my passions, coaching the sport of weightlifting. As a young strength coach and now professor teaching other young coaches, I was always frustrated I could not find a book that was practical, and included many examples, in presenting how to build set and repetition schemes along with weekly and daily program. Even now there are not many books that actually provide practical and not just theoretical information. After recognizing the need for a practical text that any trainer, coach and barbell enthusiast could use, the authors constructed this book to: 1) provide some background theory on sets and repetition schemes along with weekly and daily training but, more importantly, 2) give practical examples of daily and weekly set and repetition programming strategies. This book is not intended as a text book but instead a quick reference for coaches, trainers and those that just love to lift. The main topics of this book include the theory behind the sets and repetition schemes and, more importantly, the practical application of theory with actual program examples including: wave training, accommodating resistance training (bands and chains), Anderson lifts, eccentric training, pyramidal loading schemes, velocity training, autoregulation and weekly programming ideas and strategies.

About the Author
Since 2001 Dr. Miller has served as a strength coach for a large range of athletes from middle school and high school athletes, to various levels of collegiate athletes, to professional and Olympic athletes. Currently he is the strength coach for multiple USA Rowing athletes including the mens lightweight four and three top level heavyweight female rowers. He also is the founder and head coach of the OCU Barbell club and OKC Barbell Club, United States Weightlifting sanctioned clubs. The clubs, established in 2011, currently boast over 20 members including multiple national level competitors. Dr. Miller received his PhD from the University of Utah in Exercise Physiology in 2010 and has participated as an author or presenter in various, and multiple, scholarly products. Dr. Miller has been an active member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association for over 15 years, earning his Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist certification in 2006. Dr. Miller currently serves as department chair and is an associate professor in Exercise and Sport Science at Oklahoma City University, a position he has held since 2011. Most important, Dr. Miller has been a barbell enthusiast since he was 9, using his passion for lifting to help him reach his goals in becoming a college football player, strength coach and professor.

Awesome book on program structure

As a preface, I was sent a free copy of Foundational Weight Training and asked to give a review after seeing a post on a weight lifting site
With that being said, I whole-heartedly endorse this book for someone looking either to form their own program or for those who want to understand the efficacy of proven programs. The book talks about the relationship and balance between volume and intensity, set and rep schemes, and gives advanced strategies for those who have been a student of the iron game for a while. I recommend this book for the weight lifter who wants to know both how and why

This book is great for the knowledge and info you have always need answers to. The information in the book really makes it easy to understand the how and the why of strength training, programming, energy systems, set and reps schemes and more. Very good book and worth the price. This is a must for every strength coach even just to brush up on all the little details go with coaching and training people. Thanks

I read the whole book this weekend.......complete with underlines, circles, notes in the column and my own outline of the basics. Until this book, Iv not had an answer to any of my "why" questions regarding programming. NOW I KNOW because this book explained it in such a simple and easy to follow way. I could go on and on. Thank you Dr. Miller for writing this book and stoking my enthusiasm with the science behind the barbell.
