Good advise but not very practical.

I gave this book a 3.5 because it satisfied the reason why i bought it, it improved my memory. However, i removed a star because some of the techniques in this book are less then practical. I suppose if you want to be a memory champion you could apply all the techniques in this book all the time but otherwise you'd be kinda silly to be constantly associating old information with new information is strange ways in an attempt never to forget anything. That's another reason why i removed a star, i just summed the entire book up in on sentence; associate old information with new information in strange way frequently. I guess that requires some explanation but anything that simple shouldn't cost so much.

Waste of Time

This book is such a waste of time that I'm embarassed it's even on my purchase list. I don't know what he was thinking when he wrote this. His fundamental idea is OK, once you trudge through PAGES of infomercial-style blathering to get there, but his point has nothing to do with that stupid graph. It's not a graph. It's just an illustration that requires A LOT of explanation to understand. It's a picture that requires 1000 words.

About the Author
Darrell Young (DigitalDarrell) is a full-time author and professional photographer with a background in information technology engineering.

He has been an avid photographer since 1968 when his mother gave him a Brownie Hawkeye camera. Darrell has used Nikon cameras and Nikkor lenses since 1980. He has an incurable case of Nikon Acquisition Syndrome (NAS) and delights in working with Nikon's newest digital cameras.

Living near Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway has given him a real concern for the natural environment and a deep interest in nature photography. You'll often find Darrell standing behind a tripod in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. He loves to write, as you can see in the Resources area of the Nikonians Online community (Nikonians.org) and at his Master Your Nikon blog (MasterYourNikon.com).

He joined the Nikonians community in the year 2000, and his literary contributions led to his invitation to become the founding member of the Nikonians Writers Guild.

A 5 Star must have for Nikon D810 owners!

I am an avid amateur photographer and have owned several of the best Nikon DSLRs. Owners manuals just don't do it for me and I have always bought Darrell Young's "Mastering the Nikon ---" books. I have tried other well known Nikon camera authors and unfortunately they just don't have the writing style and flow that Darrell Young has. I purchased the D810 when it was first released by Nikon and although I have spent a lot of time with the camera, Darrell Young' D800 book and the owners manual I was just basically treading water until this book was released. Although I thought I knew this magnificent camera well, I have picked up many ideas and pointers that will make my use of this camera much more effective. The book is easy to read and follow and I will use it very frequently to get to know my camera better. The D810 is a complex camera and this book explains and provides advice on its menu settings in a way that I can understand and follow.

If you have purchased a Nikon D810 (even if you have owned other Nikon DSLRs) this book is a must read. Pick a rainy day and go cover to cover (with the camera in your lap). The D810 is a powerful tool and Darrell Young will help you get the most out of it. The writing style lets you easily get through what could be just another dry camera manual. I have owned multiple pro level Nikon cameras and I am familiar with their Menu system. None the less this book was a great help in setting up my new camera.
Take the D810 and go shoot, but if you really want to get the most out of your investment and take great pictures read the book.

Kindle Edition a Smart Carry-Along

I was curious about the possibility of carrying this manual around with me on my Kindle Fire, so I downloaded the sample. After reading through the first chapters it was clear that this would make a great camera bag companion which could even be brought along on iPhone with the Kindle App. I quickly purchased the full edition.

On the Kindle Fire, images can be double tapped and pinched to enlarge and can be viewed in horizontal format when necessary. They hold their quality quite well. What I like most about the digital copy is that I can highlight information I feel I will go back to regularly and even include my own notes.

The book is packed with information but is easy to follow. It's detailed to a fault with step by step guides. Most importantly author Darrell Young does not just offer rote direction but includes his suggestions as to what photographic circumstances the current topic would lend itself. I immediately found his review of the camera's Auto-FP High Speed Sync functions useful.

I have several other text manuals for my previous Nikon DSLR's but based on this one I think I will stick with Mr. Young's guides in the future.

Insightful and practical!

This is a story about a man and his family buying a boat and the ups and downs they faced in the first year of using it.
If you aren't that technically minded then this is the book for you. And myself, not knowing much technical information, found this book to be insightful and full of informative things that I didn't know or even consider, such as weather monitoring five days before you set off anywhere!
It contains useful knowledge of a practical nature, in particular the medical kits and medical information and costs of running and maintaining the boat.
It shows both the good and bad parts about your first year of owning a Nordhavn 62, with parts breaking and learning actually how to pilot the boat.
I enjoyed the pictures but thought maybe a few more schematics could have been used to show what was being described about the boat and where it was.
It's written comically and with a light hearted feel to make for an enjoyable read of one family's adventure on their new Nordhavn boat.
And there are some nice bits of trivia at the end.

From Family to Crew to Experience to Entertaining!

From "Family to Crew" was a very enjoyable fast-paced read that I did not want to end! The story documents the author's first year of experience with his Nordhavn 62, "Pendana," a motor yacht designed to circumnavigate the globe.

The author has a wonderful sense of humor and does a great job connecting to the reader. I was especially impressed that not only did he allow his wife to maneuver the vessel but he also encouraged her to do so!

Anyone who enjoys the subject of boats or cruising can benefit from reading "From Family to Crew." It doesn't matter whether or not you are an experienced yachtsman; there is always something new to be learned from a good book.

I look forward to more from this author. In the meantime, I will be reading his blog posts and viewing his YouTube videos about his adventures aboard "Pendana." Quite entertaining!

About the Author
Alan Rogers is professor of Electronics in the Department of Electronic Engineering at King's College London. He has published well over 180 papers in learned journals and has initiated 11 patents. Professor Rogers holds a double first in the Natural Sciences Tripos from Cambridge University, and a Ph.D. in radio astronomy and space physics from University College London. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics, a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers, and a Senior Member of the Institution of Electronic and Electrical Engineers.
