Chef Sarah Labensky
Currently a professor of culinary arts at Woosong University’s Sol International Culinary Arts School in Daejeon, Korea, Chef Sarah Labensky was previously Founding Director of the Culinary Arts Institute at Mississippi University for Women, as well as a professor of culinary arts at Scottsdale (Arizona) Community College. �Chef Sarah has also owned restaurants in Columbus, MS and spent many years as a working pastry cook and caterer. �She is co-author of On Cooking: A Textbook of Culinary Fundamentals (Pearson, 5/e update, 2014), The Prentice Hall Essentials Dictionary of Culinary Arts (Prentice Hall, 2007), and Applied Math for Food Service (Prentice Hall, 1997).

Chef Priscilla Martel
Priscilla Martel is a professional chef, educator and food writer with a special interest in artisan baking, the pastry arts and Mediterranean cuisines. She honed her cooking skills at Restaurant du Village, a country French restaurant opened in Chester, CT in 1979. Today, she operates All About Food, which holds several baking patents and collaborates with food manufacturers and restaurants to create innovative products, menus and marketing programs.

She is a visiting instructor at Boston University’s certificate program in the culinary arts. She speaks to consumer and professional organizations about baking, almonds and healthy cooking. She is a contributing writer for Flavor and the Menu Magazine and the culinary director of American Almond Products Company, a leading baking-industry ingredient manufacturer. �She is an active member of the International Association of Culinary Professionals, Bread Baker's Guild of America and the International Association of Foodservice Editors.

She is co-author of On Cooking: A Textbook of Culinary Fundamentals (Pearson, 5/e update, 2014) and Math for Bakers DVD.

Belgian-born pastry chef and confectioner, Eddy Van Damme is Professor in the Baking and Pastry Arts Program at Houston Community College. He studied at pastry school in Bruges and at PIVA in Antwerp, Belgium as well as in Paris at LeN�tre and Cacao Barry before coming to the United States over 20 years ago. �Winner of 5 American Culinary Federation Gold Medals, Chef Van Damme consults to many companies including Imperial Sugar. Very Highly Recommended Reference for the "Foodie" who wants to learn a lot more on the subject!

This is one of those books (like its companion "On Cooking" that is a wealth of information whether you are a food professional or a novice cook. It is a text book, but it is excellent. It is presented in a clear, well illustrated, logically organized manner and is easy to read and understand even if you are a novice.

The price of this and the companion will scare some folks away. That is a pity as you could easily buy several other cookbooks totaling way more than this but not get the information and understanding that you would from this book. If you are a cook, serious about cooking, beginning but wanting to learn or know someone who is, this is the book to get. My wife is a Master Food Volunteer in VA trained by VA Tech. This is also known as a Master Food Preserver in other states who complete the same training program through their state university. She and others like her educate the public on food preparation, sanitation, storage, preserving, and other related food topics. For her, this is the "go to" reference on the subject regarding baking, as is the other for cooking.

This is the most comprehensive detailed cooking textbook you will ever, ever need. It troubleshoots, provides alternatives, and has an amazing array of baking styles. I couldn't believe the unique variations and diversity in recipes. I grew more grateful as I read every chapter.

When R. Murray Schafer first published TUNING OF THE WORLD (the subtitle of this edition) in 1977, it had a stunning and lasting affect on musicians and recordists throughout the world. Every facet of this work is important to know about and the narrative still reads like a contemporary novel - impossible to put down and never dated. He informs us how to re-train our ears to listen better and more wisely. He defines, for the first time, the soundscape and the myriad ways it fits into and affects our lives.

This book is seminal to my work as a naturalist and sound designer and I have read it many times in the past three decades. It is that important.

I read the first edition 20+ years ago and have always since tried to turn my musician friends on to it. If you compose, produce or do any type of sound design the info in this book is essential. It really opened my ears and my mind. Great book.

The castle is seized by the Imperial Army, headed by Prince Mefist who decides to use Montebello because of its strategic location. Prince Mefist soon demands the younger nuns for the officers' bordello and forces Therese (Mother Superior Therese) to choose between giving in to his demands or he will seize women from the local village. Therese resigns to the inevitable and assumes her new position of Madam, thus ensuring her continued support of the nuns. Though soon enough Therese finds she is falling under the spell of the Prince. You will need to keep an open mind when reading this story about a group of nuns who become prostitutes. This book is one of the more controversial erotic novels.� Although at times Prince Mefist and his sister, Wanda, are blas� about what is forced on these nuns, I still found this story kept me interested to discover the fate of these women. It was well written and it displayed emotional depth and character development, as well as the differing viewpoints of the various characters. The author does not intentionally set out to titillate the readers. The [book] is interesting and there are some very HOT moments with some very tasteful scenes. The premise offered here is that this may be a situation born out of the necessity of war; these women simply have no other choice. This book also centers on the story of Therese's sexual awakening through Mefist and his sister, Wanda. With their help Therese is awakened to a life of deep sensuality, but also craving intimacy from the man she loves, Mefist. Prince Mefist is a charismatic, handsome, and debonair character who easily maniapulates but also treats people under his charge with care and kindness. The Prince and the Nun is one of the earlier novels by Jacqueline George and is set in 1940 in the Slovakian village of Krasna Dolina. Therese von Falberg is Mother Superior of the Sisters of Magdalene, whose Convent is housed in Montebello Castle and also the Chatelaine of the Castle whilst the reigning Count Egerhazy and his family have fled to America at the first rumblings of war. When Captain Prince Franz Mefist of the Imperial Army turns up to establish his Army base at the Castle, he matter-of-factly informs Therese he will need a dozen of her nuns to entertain his officers in the Officers Club. At her shocked refusal, he orders some village women to be found for the purpose. Therese soon realises that, to save the wives and daughters of the village, she will have to agree to become the Madam of the nuns' bordello. Mefist's cousin Wanda turns up to help the nuns become courtesans and the girls are happy to follow orders. But as a nun, Therese finds her growing attraction to Mefist and her curiosity about sex disturbing.
I have always enjoyed sexy romance and erotica, but what drew me to this novel was the plot. At first I was unsure about nuns in the 40s being so uninhibited, then I decided that with their vow of obedience to their Mother Superior and Franz's and Wanda's charisma and after all, it's the war, I could accept that and sit back and enjoy the story. Certainly, none of the nuns who taught me were like these: I guess I was taught by Sister Brigitte clones. I remain intrigued at where Therese drew the line on her own personal acceptable behaviour. This story has plenty of humour and romance and some very hot sex in different flavours. The backstory of the war goings-on give the plot realism and some lighter relief between the hotter scenes. The characters had some depth and novel asks some ethical questions about life during wartime. I would have liked a bit more of Therese and Mefist at the end. The name of the sisters' order was a cute touch, considering the profession of Mary Magdalene. I enjoyed this novel and I think it would translate well into an adult movie.

Gabriele Lanaro

Gabriele Lanaro is a PhD student in Chemistry at the University of British Columbia, in the field of Molecular Simulation. He writes high performance Python code to analyze chemical systems in large-scale simulations. He is the creator of Chemlab—a high performance visualization software in Python—and emacs-for-python—a collection of emacs extensions that facilitate working with Python code in the emacs text editor. This book builds on his experience in writing scientific Python code for his research and personal projects.

A good, short, and cheap introduction to speeding up Python code

This book is fantastic for what it's for, and hopefully I can describe it well enough so that no one is surprised that I rated this 5 stars. FYI, I bought the kindle version and had no problems.

This book is extremely short. I was able to read it while flying over just a couple of states, but I've been using Python, Numpy, and Cython for a while now. I got this book to try and pick up on anything I didn't know. I found some things I wasn't familiar with (e.g. ipython parallel, multiprocessing, numexpr, and some profiling tools) and thought this book explained them well.

Essentially, there are a few simple examples that the author uses to show how to exploit some numerical and parallel processing libraries to get massive speedups in your Python code. These speedups are quite impressive, but that's mostly because Python is rather inefficient at most things in favor of flexibility. The key here is to shoehorn Python code into C code, whether that's through a library full of someone else's C code, or your own C extensions. The book shows that this process can actually be really, really simple in terms of code. In my opinion I think understanding how or why you should attempt certain optimizations is the hard part. I'm not sure a book can give you that as it's something you sort of pick up with practice, but this book gives you a good introduction to the tools for getting you there.

At this price point, if you are struggling with slow Python code and want to learn how to speed it up, buying the Kindle version at $10 will be worth your money. But do have a look at the Cython documentation as well, it is also pretty good. There are a couple of papers entitled "Fast numerical computations with Cython" by Seljebotn, and "Cython tutorial" by Behnel, Bradshaw, and Seljebotn that also serve as useful extensions to the documentation and this book for doing Cython work. See also the recent Cython book by Kurt Smith, which goes over similar topics but is a little longer (N.B., I haven't read through that one in its entirety).

This is what you need to know....

All languages have an optimal way that they can be written to get the most performance out of them. Once you understand those techniques, you are on your way to creating more and more efficient solutions. This book is great for the novice to intermediate python developer and serves as a guide to writing better solutions.
