Finally! An authentic & excellent cookbook for Calabrian cooking.

I've been searching for a cookbook and travel book with Calabrian roots for so long. Many books are 'Southern Italian' but only delve into the well-known Neopolitan recipies. I am a first-generation Italian-American, whose parents immigrated from Calabria so when I saw these recipes in print I almost cried. Very authentic and fun to see the dialect in there too. The history, stories, recipes and photos are outstanding. Thank you for writing this book. Finalmente! p.s. note to author on the 'Peaches' dessert, you can get Alkermes liquor flavoring in the states, Torre Products in New York carries it. I believe they are in Brooklyn and ship. And if you are reading this wondering if you should buy this book, don't hesitate. I bought a few copies for family to pass on our roots and recipes.

Authentic, comprehensive, and simply gorgeous

As some background, I am an American of Calabrian heritage who has been living in my ancestors' village in Calabria since 2003; I received this book for review on my blog, Bleeding Espresso.

Rosetta Costantino was born in Calabria and moved to America with her family at age 14. Although they left behind much of what was familiar to them, the Costantino family never lost their culinary traditions -- and now Rosetta shares them with us in My Calabria: Rustic Family Cooking from Italy's Undiscovered South.

When paging through My Calabria, you feel like an honorary member of the family at the table as you learn about how Rosetta's father recreated their Calabrian garden in Oakland, California; how various members of the family make the same dish; and also the 11 ingredients every Calabrian pantry should have on hand.

Rosetta also shares information about the historical and cultural influences on Calabrian cuisine and lifestyle, so aside from being a wonderful collection of recipes (150) that includes appetizers through dessert, My Calabria is simply a wonderful resource book on the region -- you're getting so much more than a cookbook here.

The recipes themselves are authentic as they come and easy to follow -- one of the best things about Calabrian cooking is that it's user-friendly as it uses so few ingredients -- and the book is just gorgeous. There are plenty of full-page and other sized color photos throughout, not only of recipes but also of various sights from around Calabria.

From a personal standpoint as someone who has been making Calabrian food ever since I could cook -- first from my grandmother's recipes and now also from my mother-in-law's -- I give this book five very full espresso cups out of five. Rosetta is a wonderful tour guide through this region's food, history, and culture, and I highly recommend My Calabria for anyone who is interested in Calabria, southern Italy, or southern Italian cuisine.

Fabulous Cookbook from one of Italy's Most Rustic Regions

I've lived in Calabria since 2006 and was sent a copy of My Calabria to review for my website, My Bella Vita. I wrote a review there, as well as a few other sites, but since people come here to buy the book-and I always read Amazon reviews before making my own purchases-I wanted to write something here, as well.

It is hard to find reliable English-language information on Calabria and I loved that this cookbook was more than just a collection of recipes. Yes, it is chock-full of authentic Calabrian cooking, homemade pasta, sauces, meat, fish, veggie and dessert dishes, but it also has the history of various places in Calabria, bright, vivid photos (of more than just the food) and it is written in an easy, conversational tone that makes for easy reading.

If you are an Italophile or fan of Calabria, you'll enjoy this cookbook.

What is darker tahn black?

We jump in this second Lulu play to after her trial and imprisonment, a year and a helf later. Countess Geschwitz has managed to get Lulu some cholera-infected underwear making her and herself sick. They both were taken to hospital for treatment and Lulu escapes by impersonating Countess Geschwitz. We have gone seriously down. The student Hugenberg, expelled from his school, is in some reform-school from which he escapes to make a short anecdotic apparition in the play. Alva is on the run since the death of his father whose paper he has sold. But he does not have any success in his writing any more. Lulu arrives and Alva declares his love to her, but an ambiguous love because his love is nothing but a musical metaphor of her body. We close this first act on this metaphor that may promise something, but what, since she is on the run for the murder of Alva's father to whom she was married? Then the descent into hell goes very fast. They move to Paris and Lulu is blackmailed by Count Casti Piani who wants to sell her to a brothel in Cairo, Egypt. She has to run. At the same time the acrobat Rodrigo tries to blackmail her into giving him twenty thousand marks she would ghet from Alva. She has to get rid of him, which she manages with the help of Countess Geschwitz and Schigolch, her old friend, father or whatever, since we will never know for sure. But at the same time Alva gets ruined because he had invested all his money in Jungfrau railway shares through te banker Puntschu, and these shares are brutally devalued, which brings into the picture an episode of antisemitism. She runs away with Alva, Schigolch and Geschwitz, leaving the corpse of Rodrigo behind. She moves to London where she becomes a plain streetwalker and we see her customers. The first one, Hunidei, is a religious freak who forces her to keep silent. The second client, Kungu Poti, is the son of an African emperor. He knocks Alva on the head when Alva tries to defend Lulu from the rape Kungu Poti is on the point of carrying out. Schigolch gets the body out of the way into Lulu's room. The third client is Dr Hilti, a university tutor in philosophy, who runs away when he discovers the dead Alva. Finally the fourth client, Jack (not yet the Ripper like in Alban Berg's opera) arrives. He will finish the cleaning up of the place by killing Countess Geschwitz first and then Lulu. Altogether only Schigolch will survive who had gone down to the pub to have some Christmas pudding. This second Lulu play is bringing her so low that we kind of sigh with relief when they are all dead, even if Jack is loose in London, but London is a lair of killers and thieves. At last they are at peace. That's amazing how death seems to be a liberation from life, a salvation from sin. In this drama there is no hope and cannot be any, no possible freedom in survival. We think of Gustav Malher who reaches the very same and similar point when he expresses his belief death is a liberation too but with the future or perspective to go back to the earth and join or merge with the universal cycle of cosmic energy. Humanity can only dream of cosmic salvation in this godless century. Wedekind paints a picture that is darker than black, an unescapable total damnation in life and no future beyond, except to get free of that damnation by dying.

Never mind Ebola, the hemorrhagic disease that was the main subject of Preston's 1994 #1 bestseller, The Hot Zone. What we really should be worrying about, explains Preston in this terrifying, cautionary new title, is smallpox, or variola. But wasn't that eradicated? many might ask, particularly older Americans who remember painful vaccinations and the resultant scars. Officially, yes, nods Preston, who devotes the first half of the book to the valorous attempt by an army of volunteers to wipe out the virus (an attempt initially sparked by '60s icon Ram Dass and his Indian guru) via strategic vaccination; in 1977 the last case of naturally occurring smallpox was documented in Somalia, and today the variola virus exists officially in only two storage depots, in Russia and at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta (in the freezer of the title). To believe that variola is not held elsewhere, however, is nonsense, argues Preston, who delves into the possibility that several nations, including Iraq and Russia, have recently worked or are currently working with smallpox as a biological weapon. Adult/High School-This book about smallpox begins with the anthrax attacks of October, 2001, and, by the end of this thriller, Preston has chillingly linked the two topics. All of the anthrax evidence from the Hart Senate Office Building was taken to the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) in Fort Detrick, MD, and it is here that the author first brings smallpox into consideration by introducing Peter Jahrling, the organization's senior scientist. He believes that smallpox, which has killed more people than any other infectious disease, is the greatest biological threat facing humanity. Preston relates the history of smallpox from 1000 B.C. to the outbreaks in the 1970s. He goes into great detail about the World Health Organization's campaign to eradicate it and the lost opportunity to destroy it forever. His final chapter introduces the idea of genetically modified smallpox that might be resistant not only to vaccines, but also to acquired immunity. The author draws readers into his narrative by humanizing his facts; researchers, WHO workers, and smallpox victims relay parts of this vivid and alarming story. Fans of Preston's The Hot Zone (Anchor, 1995) will definitely want to read this work for that subtle blend of information and horror that he is so adept at providing.

True Masters are Minimalists

I usually like reading true-crime books, and I generally don't seek out books written by any particular author; I just want a good read about a great story that I've heard about. But there is one exception: Jack Olsen. He may no longer be with us, but his books surely live on, and I'm always taking a peek to see if another one of his works has recently become available in the Kindle format. Some people have even called him "An American Treasure," and I don't have any problem with that statement.

And Richard Preston is surely right up there as well. This is my second read from him, the first being, "The Hot Zone," and I was mesmerized while reading that, just like I was mesmerized while reading "The Demon in the Freezer." With both of these gentlemen though, I will say that, if you read any of their works, you may have trouble sleeping at night. After all, Mr. Olsen liked to write about serial killers while Mr. Preston likes to write about viruses. And it's hard to say which one of these real-life scourges might kill you first.

Most authors use flowery language to get their points across, while neither of these gentlemen ever seem to add one unnecessary word. It's as if they write a chapter, backtrack, and then remove any words that are unneeded. It is the case that, when telling a story, words often do just get in the way; natural language is somewhat flawed, after all. But you wouldn't know it while reading the works from these two masters.

I do like how Mr. Preston describes a new character for the first time in a chapter. He must have a template, and he must follow that template religiously. You might read something like, "John Smith is a doctor at John Hopkins. He has gray hair, parted in the middle, with a slight frown on his face." Etc. I like it. Why reinvent the wheel, after all? But Mr. Preston's writings are far from just workmanlike; when he gets into the meat of a subject, you know that the potatoes are soon coming. However, you just hope that you'll be able to keep down a meal after reading an unsavory description of how some poor soul dies from, say, smallpox.

Keeping in the spirit of both writers, I'll keep this review short and sweet. But I will add the following: for fans of Richard Preston, I highly encourage you to try a book or two from Jack Olsen as well. You surely won't be disappointed, either way.

good storytelling of an important and scary topic.

This is a terrific book which vividly describes the often secretive or unheralded world of the dedicated international teams who research and control or eradicate dangerous diseases or bioterrorism agents. It should be required reading for all high school and college students to give them historical and current day perspectives on the almost unimaginable danger these agents possess. It may help temper a few of our "outrages" over the "failure" to find Saddam's "weapons of mass destruction," or current activism which welcomes potentially "under vetted" refugees or travelers from politically dangerous countries or regions of the world. One traveler carrying a bioweapon disease or agent into an unprepared region can wreak massive havoc on the populations and set off a rapidly spreading firestorm of illness, suffering, and death.

Scary, true and still relevant

Like most kids of my generation I had read Preston's scary Ebola book, "The Hot Zone", but I had not gotten around to reading his book on smallpox. The volume benefits from Preston's masterly and riveting narrative-investigative style that always keeps you on the edge of your seat. His writing is a case study in understanding how even mundane observations and details about people and events can enrich good non-fiction writing.

Smallpox does not appear as dangerous as Ebola, but in some sense it's even more so because of its relatively slow and easy spread. As in the Hot Zone, some of the best accounts of the book feature high-strung and courageous scientists working in Level 4 hazardous areas, slicing up smallpox-ridden monkeys and looking at anthrax spores. The book focuses on the anthrax mailings after 9/11, on the amazingly successful smallpox eradication program which eradicated the disease in 1975 and the smallpox biowarfare program in the former Soviet Union.

The latter is probably the scariest part of the book. The Soviet Union kept on secretly working on smallpox even after the US and other countries dismantled their own programs in the 1970s. Something like 20 tons of smallpox have gone missing since the end of the Cold War and, encouraged by the eradication of the efforts, the WHO and other organizations have destroyed almost their entire stocks of smallpox vaccine. In addition there's no tested drug for smallpox. Combined with the ability to create engineered versions of the virus that are immune to vaccines, these three facts might contribute to a disaster of catastrophic proportions surpassing AIDS (at its peak smallpox was killing about 6 million people every year).

Fortunately there's a select few highly dedicated scientists and doctors who are trying to create new vaccines, but government regulations largely prevent them from working on the virus. As of now there are only two recognized places in the world where smallpox exists - the CDC in Atlanta and the Moscow Institute in Russia - but almost nobody thinks that these are the only two places. Hopefully we won't have to find out about the existence of other sources the hard way.

He is certified by the Iranian Bar Association as a Number One Attorney, qualified to handle cases involving the death penalty, and is admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Iran. Exposing the origin of honor violence in Islam

Comprehensive. Sourced. Well researched. Logically arranged.

These are a few of the words that come to mind after reading this book.

Every time the news media reports a story of a potential honor crime, groups such as the Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR) are quick to say such activity has no basis in Islam. No longer will they be able to state such rubbish. Akbari and Tetreault have done a great service to expose this lie.

I thought I knew a good deal about Islam, and indeed I do. But this book has served to fill a void in the knowledge and understanding I had of the phenomenon of what is called ‘honor killing.’ I have both taught and written about honor violence as it relates to understanding women’s issues in Islam, a subject about which I am passionate. But until I read this book, my understanding of the connection of such violence to Islam was tenuous at best. No longer. I now understand fully and will be able to articulate such a connection to anyone who doubts or asks.

This book is very timely. As Islam spreads its tentacles into lands previously unoccupied by Muslims, it carries with it behaviors and customs that seem foreign to the host culture, including honor violence. As the authors note in a footnote near the end of the book, “Wherever Islam has put its foot, from Norway to Nigeria and from Morocco to Indonesia, the practice of ghayra violence has been implemented.” It is of utmost importance the host culture not only understand the ideological roots of ghayra (it is not simply a cultural phenomena shared by many cultures) but also be able to recognize when a female may be in danger of becoming a victim of ghayra violence and provide a mechanism of escape from it.

Akbari and Tetreault note the term ‘honor killing’ is really a misnomer that does not accurately describe the phenomena. The proper term is “ghayra violence” which can include killing as the last step in a logical process to be followed. Ghayra violence is distinct from other forms of honor killing found in other cultures because, as the authors note, Islam not only condones such violence but actually commands it as a basic duty of following the religion, and carefully scripts the perpetrators actions.

Ghayra violence is founded on the concept of ‘enjoining good and forbidding evil,’ a phrase repeated throughout the Koran. Ghayra is derived from sharia, the legal code of Islam which itself is derived from both the Koran and the hadith, traditions attributed to Muhammad. Sharia dictates specific steps that must be taken when a member of the Islamic community has engaged in certain forbidden behavior, triggering the need to ‘enjoin the good and forbid evil.’ The forbidden behavior almost always involves violating sharia’s regulations in terms of dress or behavior that could lead a woman to tempt a man sexually by the forbidden behavior. Something as simple as an unmarried Muslim woman talking to an unrelated male, or not wearing a full burka thereby exposing her feminine form to males, can be grounds for ghayra. “Forbidding evil” is the step-by-step, progressive process by which such behavior is identified and corrected. If less severe early steps of the process fail to bring about the intended correction and the forbidden behavior continues, the final step in the process can, and often does, involve the death of the offending female, completely sanctioned in sharia.

This is not just a book that explains where such “ghayra” honor violence finds its justification in Islam. It is also a very practical book. The final chapters are devoted to helping law enforcement, social workers, school staff, and anyone else who may come into contact with potential victims. A worksheet to help identify victims of ghayra violence is included, as well as practical steps one can take to prevent such violence against potential victims.

I’m not going to give away any more; you have to get the book and read it for yourself! I will guarantee if you read this book, you will have a very clear understanding of the roots of honor violence in Islam and will be able to respond to misinformation about such violence having no connection to Islam.

Much more than just Honor Killing-a must read for a better understanding of the Muslim view of Non-Muslims

Much more than just the topic of Honor Killing. The book provides a good synopsis of what Shariah Law entails and its inseparability from the Quran. This book provides many insights into Islam and how non-Muslims are viewed by Muslims as kafir (infidels, unclean, filth). It discusses in detail the Shariah dictated requirement of Muslims to lie and deceive non-Muslims and apostates, and the ultimate goal of Islam "deen"- the spread of Islam until a worldwide Caliphate is formed under Shariah Law. The final chapter provides possible approaches to identify the early signs and intervene before an honor killing is committed and suggests changing the law to allow deportation of the male family member when he first threatens violence.

Should be required study

Truly enlightening. Clearly illuminates the reality of absolute incompatibility between Islam and western civilization. Islam is a collection of beliefs created by one individual, of a 7th century mentality, nurtured in the harsh environment and hard life realities of the Levant, to whom 1.5 billion people now fiercely subscribe. It is an absolute, uncompromising structure imposed on all under its influence 24/7/365. It is a dire threat to the western way of life.

This is the book that should be used to educate our children about this particular belief system. The danger of accepting Islam as if it were simply an innocuous branch of an off-beat religion cannot be overemphasized. It must be opposed, but it will take understanding such as provided in this book to bring home an objective opposition to Islam's encroachment into the western world.

Great content, and right to the point.

I've been looking for a book on this subject for a while. There's plenty of pdfs online, but nothing as complete, yet concise as this book.

You will need the right prerequisites about computer architecture and digital electronic to fully appreciate the content. Some Verilog basics is also desirable in my opinion.

After just a few chapters, you will be able to make your first cpu with a complete ALU and sequencer. The following chapters are dedicated to advanced topics like interrupt handling in your CPU, pipeline and superstar architectures, memory hierarchy...

There are many diagrams, which is really helpful given the complexity of the task. Code is also available online.

I really recommend this book if you are interested in microprocessor architecture and understanding how it works under the hood.

I have the Chinese version of this book and it is quite good for beginner.

the verilog code is good to help get you going incrementally. I understand this book is for basic CPU design implementation but would still prefer the author to discuss some performance/power trade-off for the designs in each chapter.

One more thing, you can actually get a copy of the source code from the publisher's website.
