One of the very best!

There is a truly vast quantity of books, articles, and texts available on Alexander, and I have read as many as possible. Without a shadow of doubt I can recommend Lane Fox's effort as the best I have yet encountered (for Alexander buffs I include in that list of inferiors Badian, Tarn, Wilcken, Schackermeyr, Green - both of them - Hammond, Dodge, Engels, Bosworth, Hamilton, and Griffith to name but a few). Robin Lane Fox is rightly sceptical of sentimentality when dealing with his subject. Nor does he come to Alexander with his mind already inflexible and set on the King's more cotroversial aspects - a practice deplorably monotonous within the field. On ethical issues he keeps in mind the moral tone of the day - a habit that many modern historians would do well to engage in. He is rigorous in the extreme in his use of sources; he is analytical without being academic to the point of tediousness; and he deals with Alexander as a broad and complex human being - that is to say that he deals with the Macedonian as a ruler, a general, a lover, a patron of the arts, a drinker, a hunter, a reader of literature, a quester after glory, a figure of charisma, and also as a man of complexity and failings. It is in this last respect, his varied view of the Alexander, that he succeeds the most, for many of his biographers tend to concentrate on one aspect to the detriment of all others and consequently fail to give a rounded picture of the King. Lane Fox realises that oversimplifying the personalities of long dead figures does more to cloud them than to clarify them. For this he is to be commended highly. His style is lucid and often pithy. If at times you are lulled into thinking that you are reading a novel, don't be fooled; you are constantly bombarded with scrupulously researched information that is presented in the most easy going style. He gives excellent notes and a comprehensive bibliography at the back of the book for those who are interested in the finer details of source and analysis - some 60 pages of miniscule print. I gather that some have labelled this a 'boy's own account' of the ruler. That is quite simply not the case. It is far more competent AND FACTUALLY CORRECT than most of the more academic texts currently available. If you haven't read this one you simply don't know Alexander. P.S. - If you are coming to Alexander on foot of seeing or reading the recent Michael Woods effort (In the footsteps of A the G), disregard everything you heard. The BBC series was shallow, journalistic in the worst possible way, and on more occasions than one would like to believe was factually incorrect. Fox is by far the better historian. I reiterate, this is a must.

Superb Writing

This is an extraordinary history. Anyone expecting a conventional biography will be disappointed, since the biased and fragmentary nature of the primary sources makes modern biographical treatment for Alexander impossible, even more so than for other ancient heroes. However, one thing about the peripatetic conqueror that seems to be known with some certainty is the itinerary that defined his brief life. Starting from this, Mr. Lane Fox applies his own intimate knowledge of the middle and near-eastern landscape to create a book which, at its most basic, reads like a highly literate travelogue. This is all backdrop, though, for a kind of detective story as the author picks apart the tantalizing fragments of information and disinformation that, once boiled down, reveal for us Alexander's character. The bold military prodigy is clearly apparent here, but that's the standard textbook part of the story. Rounding out the picture, we see him as the cosmopolitan diplomat, beloved egalitarian leader-of-men, bisexual libertine, respectful supplicant to his gods, forgiving victor, gallant defender of women, ostentatious potentate, superstitious fool, charismatic orator, fearless in-the-trenches combat commander, wily tactician, boyish adventurer, child-like animal lover, sophisticated Greek intellectual, reckless gambler, visionary strategist, loyal and generous friend, bloody mass killer, and drunken lout. And the truly remarkable thing about the history is that all these persona somehow hang together, creating a believable portrait that makes it clear why Alexander has fascinated politicians, soldiers and scholars for twenty-three centuries. Stylistically, this book is dense and will deter casual readers. However, some patience through the early pages gives enough time to get into the exotic poetry of place names and the flow of the story. The turgid logic of the character study takes over from there, and the case unfolds majestically. This is a brilliant historian at work and I highly recommend the book.

The Most Engaging Of The Alexander Biographies.

There is no shortage of books on Alexander The Great, but Robin Lane Fox supercedes them all with this grand, highly detailed and impressive work that manages to entertain, educate and excite the reader about the subject. One of the benefits of Fox's "Alexander The Great" is that he decides to do away with boring, repetitive structures and decides to use both the evidence but basic human experience to tell the tale of one of history's most fascinating kings. History, Fox explains, is motivated much by human emotion, passionate feeling aside from the usual politics. This gives his book a natural dramatic touch, it doesn't have the feel of a fictitious novel, but of a biography that really tries to explore Alexander and those around him as people. One of the disappointments in Paul Cartledge's recent biography is that he relies strictly on tablets and scrolls, and dismisses the human areas, creating characters that are cardboard cut-outs. To Cartledge everything is politics, all true relationships homosexual and any other intercourse purely done for politics' sake. Fox here gives us the portrait of a man driven by a need to discover, to reach the heights of Achilles, but also a haunted man, especially by his mother Olympias. The book is also well-detailed in the culture of the times and in his descriptions of landscapes and even home interiors, Fox manages to completely transport the reader to another time and place. Each chapter is richly detailed with not only the story of Alexander, but his influence on world history and leaders like Julius Caesar and Napoleon. We get fascinating myths, comments, tales of conspiracy and murder and one of the great interchanges of culture ever. Fox educates us about customs and rituals, beliefs and battle tactics in a work of enormous scope. It is an important thing to study the past to better understand the present. Once again we are in a time when the west is going into the east, the story of Alexander has never been more relevant. "Alexander The Great" is epic and exciting and should be sought out by anyone currently engaged in reading world history.

MINGUS the surprising

First of all, it was really surprising for me to see how much of the book has nothing to do with the music - this is a very personall confession, told in a form of a novel in which, accidentally, some of the characters (besides Mingus) have the names of Charlie Parker, Art Tatum, Duke Ellington, Miles Davis and, since the depiction of Red Norvo is not very flattering (and he was very much alive when the book was published), he is "hidden" but instantly recognizible to anyone who has some knowledge of the illustrious carreer of Charles (not Charlie!) Mingus...

The hero of this autobiography/novel, very often presented in third-person narration, is very much concerned with spirituality and sexuality, so the important people from the author's life (family, friends, lovers, prostitutes, pimps, medical professionals) are often not the ones you've heard of before reading the book, while some familiar names (Fats Navarro, Nat Hentoff) are here because they were important for the main topic of the book. And the topic is Charles Mingus, the human being, the man - Afican, White and Asian /but dominantly black/ - musician, lover, son, father...

Naturally, if you DON'T know much about Mingus' remarkable music, you will hardly reach for the book but, if you do, this will be an interesting insight into his rich mind.
Eric Dolphy is mentioned only once, I don't remember the mention of people like Danny Richmond or Jimmy Knepper, but the web of a complex and intricate life is remarkably presented. Compared to the music, this is not the best work of Charles Mingus, but if you like his music you probably won't mind reading this... After all, there's a lot of sex, psychiatry, violence and music inside this book; there's something for everyone's taste.

Great literature? No, but an interesting artifact anyhow...

Those looking for anything like a conventional musical bio should go to "Mingus, a Critical Biography" by Brian Priestley; "Underdog" isn't that at all; it's an artifact of Mingus' peculiar world-view at a particularly hard time in his life.

Mentally ill? Mingus was long noted for fits of depression (in spite of repeated success in the music industry, he nevertheless ended up working for the post office on a number of occasions) and a volcanic temper (he re-counts an on-stage knife-fight with Ellington trombonist Juan Tizol, but leaves out mention of his punching Jimmy Knepper in the mouth hard enough to break teeth). He sometimes channeled it for art: he was probably the first musician ever to release an album ("Black Saint") with liner notes from his psychoanalyst. In "Underdog", he recounts checking himself into Bellvue Hospital, in an ill-considered search for "some rest". That got him, he says, an offer of a lobotomy, but also yielded a song, "Hellview of Bellvue/Lock 'em Up", and he raised the interesting question: if a somewhat successful half-black jazz musician in 1960's America believed that people were out to steal from him and oppress him, was he acutely paranoid, just observant, or both?

Sexually escapist, and scatological? Well, yes, but before feminism, or political correctness, and not without pay-back: the man who bragged of trying to bury his misery in [...] and dope never apparently finds them to be a satisfactory release, and after all the orgies, writes a tune called "Half-Mast Inhibition". . .

So, listen to the music first. See the short b&w documentary. If you want accurate linear bio information or critical analysis, go to the Priestly book. Then put on "Black Saint", "Mingus Am Uh", or "Blues and Roots", and read this.

The Black Saint in a Sinner's Body

If you are a fan of Charles Mingus' music, you will certainly enjoy this wonderfully bombastic character in his autobiography. His story has his life woven in with some fictionalized characters and segments "jazzed" in, which adds quite a peculiar nature to his work. However, you will never guess what segments are true and which aren't. The work is very peculiar as an autobiography, revealing more the conversations and the feelings he underwent through his travels as opposed to a straight narrative from beginning to end. His work goes through a path of flashbacks and such, with a major emphasis on women (esp. his lovers), the road, and his jazz music. The interesting people he meets in his travels are well interweaved, and really make the story. My only criticism is when this "jazz" story starts to ramble out into peculiar segments which seem to lose your attention. The work tends to well reflect the chaotic nature of this genius. It is also a treat to listen to his music while reading... One of the many pleasures I've undertaken in. Highly recommended reading.

Filling an existing gap

This remarkable book is addressed to scientists interested in the properties of solids from the point of view of materials science. Statistical mechanics is applied to a broad set of topics of interest in this field and the book has the virtue of filling an existing gap. An earlier book on this subject was published by L. A. Girifalco thirty years ago (Statistical Physics of Materials, 1973). The present book updates the material and adds also a substantial body of novel topics that have vigorously grown and matured meanwhile.

The book grew out of a course that the author has been teaching at the University of Pennsylvania. The broad experience of L. A. Girifalco, acquired after many years of research in materials science applying the techniques of statistical mechanics (metallic and graphitic materials, defects in solids and diffusion represent some of the subjects investigated by the author) has provided him with the best background to make a wise selection of topics of importance and broad interest. In addition the contact with the students has allowed the author to optimize the pedagogical aspects. So this book is highly recommended for graduate courses, and students will find it extremely useful to get a comprehensive and updated overview of the field.

The first three chapters (approximately one fifth of the book) introduce the basic concepts of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics. This part is needed to make the volume self-contained. Even more, those three chapters, where the fundamental concepts are presented clearly at an accessible mathematical level, could form the core of a short course on basic statistical mechanics for physicists, chemists or engineers. The thermal properties of crystals arising from the vibration of the atoms are treated in Chapters 4 and 5, focusing on harmonic and anharmonic effects, respectively. The equilibrium and transport properties of electrons in metals and semiconductors are considered in Chapters 6 and 7, taking as a basis the free electron model. Classic examples of cooperative phenomena, as order-disorder transitions in alloys and magnetism, are treated in Chapters 8 and 9. The theory of phase equilibria and phase transformations is presented in Chapter 10. Sublimation, melting and the formation of solid solutions in alloys are some of the subjects considered. Critical exponents characterising how of physical properties vary with temperature near a phase transition are presented in Chapter 11, with its explanation by renormalization group theory. The surface of solid bodies is the region of contact with the outer medium and controls many technological properties of the solids. The statistical mechanics of surface and interface effects is treated in Chapter 12, focusing on adsorption, adhesion and segregation. The theory of the random motion of a particle through space, treated in Chapter 13, has a variety of uses: important applications to molecular and atomic diffusion and to the statistics of long chain molecules can be highlighted. In fact, linear polymer chains are treated in Chapter 14. Excellent Textbook for Materials Scientists and Engineers

This is an excellent, well-tested textbook on statistical mechanics for materials scientists and engineers, both graduate students and practitioners who need a refresher on how to apply useful theoretical methods,such as mean-field models of phase transitions,to the analysis of experimental data or, perhaps, want to learn something about new developments in statistical mechanics which are not often covered in materials science and engineering courses, such as critical exponents and the renormalization group. You might wonder why there is a need for yet another textbook on statistical mechanics. Well, this is a book primarily for those interested in understanding or estimating the properties of solids, rather than dwelling on the foundations of statistical mechanics, and there is not another book quite like it. It uses simple mathematics and makes much, fruitful use of simple methods like mean-field theory and simple ways of making improvements thereto. It begins with three brilliantly explained, succinctly written chapters intoducing, or reviewing, the basic principles of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, and then proceeds to cover their applications to a wide range of topics in the materials science of metals, semiconductors, and polymers. Some applications include bulk thermodynamic properties, surfaces, transport properties of electrons, phonons, and atoms,as well as phase transitions. There are eight appendices where helpful mathematical and methodological details are covered so that the expository prose in the main chapters does not get bogged down in unnecessary details. There are some useful topics covered in this book which are not easily found in other texts: for example, there are three chapters with a careful exposition of the foundations, and some applications, of the thermodynamics and kinetics of lattice defects, a topic of much importance for materials scientists and engineers; the useful and versatile Girifalco-Good method for estimating energies of interfacial adhesion is described; and the Kirkwood second-moment method for going beyond the mean-field approximation in order-disorder is derived and utilized to introduce the Landau theory of phase transitions. These are a few examples of useful topics for materials scientists not readily found elsewhere. There are also illuminating exercises at the end of each chapter. Professor Girifalco is a gifted pedagogical writer, and he has polished much of this material in his courses in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. I myself has used several chapters of this book as reference material for an advanced graduate seminar in the modeling of phase transitions in materials, and they were very successful. I highly recommend this book.

Disappointed.

It was an interesting book but very disappointing. I thought it was going to give clear cut directions on how to recondition batteries of all sorts, when it only spoke about car batteries. Then, not very informative to say the least. I would not recommend this book to anyone unless looking for very general information.

Dont bother - even if free

Dont bother.
This book opens with possibilities, especially since it talks about car batteries, NiCad batteries, NiMH batteries and LiON batteries.
Simply stated, if it is not one of these types of batteries, you might as well recycle them.
So far, so good.
Then, the book goes on to talk about car batteries only, concluding with car batteries can be reconditioned - then it is over.

What a disappointment. I was excited with the opening, especially with the talk of different battery types. However, then only talking about car batteries, and then concluding left me very disappointed.

Indonesia distilled to perfection.

I finished reading Beauty is a Wound (Cantik itu Luka translated by Annie Tucker) last week. I am stunned by how well this crazy mishmash of stories reflected the jumble that resides in an enigmatic file in my head labeled “Jawa”. All the professional reviews agree that this is an important, landmark, revolutionary, complex book. I want to explain WHY that is so true. Unless the reader understands the topic—Indonesia, it’s just another vague statement of greatness by reviewers. I would like to explain why this book is really hitting some reader’s nerves and why for others it might be inexplicable.
Kurniawan successfully put everything I know and feel about the former Dutch East Indies and today’s West Java in a blender. Then he poured out a tale that is representative of the inexplicable, tight hold Indonesia can have on someone with ties to the Mooi Indie. Reading Beauty is a Wound seemed like a visit to the homeland of my soul, and I am still struggling with just how to review this book for “non-Indonesia proficient” audiences. There is one word in Bahasa Indonesia that I keep repeating. It is “Rasa”. It means feel or taste, or sensation of. And Kurniawan has distilled the “Rasa” of Indonesia. So bear with me as I try to make sense of this momentous jumble in some logical fashion.
Translation: The translation is first rate. Nothing is lost in translation, so the book is quite easy to read. There are some Indonesian and Dutch words used for effect, but not enough to cause readers to really slow down. Some terms may confuse a western reader unfamiliar with Indonesia, but you can figure it out from context.
Story line: Like Lelaki Harimau (Man Tiger, also by Kurniawan), Beauty is Wound is really a simple ghost story, or perhaps several ghost stories! The main ghost is Dewi Ayu, (literally Goddess Pretty, and of course, an allegory for Mooi Indie, Dutch for the Beautiful Indies). Dewi Ayu, who refused to leave her Indonesian homeland when most Dutch bolted, rises from the grave years later in order to stop another ghost’s long-term curse upon her bastard progeny and their inappropriate husbands and the doomed next generation (all of whom are more allegories for sections of, or forces in, Indonesian society). The book can be read just for the story line.
Fractured Time Line: Readers need to learn the reasons for the curse and everyone’s back-story! And do they have back-stories! The interwoven Back Stories give you “The Political and Social History of Indonesia Since Colonial Times.” Kurniawan only lets you learn the important bits of the back-story as they become germane to the tale he is telling. So while the book does progress from Dutch Colonial times to contemporary Indonesia, the structure of the telling is not strictly chronological. We see the reasons for the interwoven time lines in the book when their past comes back to haunt someone. Literally.
Violence/Sex/Rape: Wow, there is plenty of sex, war and murder in this book. The violence, while graphic, seems to be exactly at the level I always imagined it to be from other sources and first person tales that I have heard from Indonesian and Dutch witnesses to these events. Indonesia is a huge, insanely diverse country that went through some extremely grim times in the last 100 years. (Watch The Year of Living Dangerously with Mel Gibson, if you want a quick primer in the feel of 1965 Indonesia.) Kurniawan is telling that multifaceted tale in the style of Indonesian folk tales and legends; the descriptions may not be factually correct, but you get the feel of the unsettled atmosphere that existed. All this happens in a coastal fictional locale called, Halimunda. (Halimun is the word for mist! So where this town actually lies is meant to be “foggy.”)
In an allegory where a country is a woman, and segments of that country other women, and “forces of evil” keep attacking that country or segments, you have many rape scenes. One could easily summarize major events in Indonesian history by saying, “Once again, Indonesia got screwed.” That’s what Kurniawan is doing. He’s not a crazy sex fiend. He is not advocating that men should treat women like that. He is using it to effect. I often want to start my own tale of Indonesia with the line, “From the day Columbus set off to locate Indonesia to steal her spices, Indonesia kept getting screwed….”
So to sum up, we have an important, epic, satirical, adult, historical fiction, ghost allegory rife with symbolism that approximates the History of the Republic of Indonesia.
Suspend all your disbelief, jettison all expectations and jump right in. The Water is Fine!
While I am screaming, “YES! I got to wallow mentally in what I have been studying for 40 years! The post-colonial period of the Republic of Indonesia,” some of you are asking, “Huh?”
To be honest, this is a book written for those familiar with (ok, really BEYOND familiar with, perhaps utterly steeped in) recent Indonesian history. Both POLITICAL and SOCIAL history during the latter half of the 20th Century and specifically those formative and determinative events that happened on the Island of Java since about 1940. The Japanese occupation, the three-way guerilla war for independence, the 1965 failed coup and its murderous anti-communist aftermath, and the perhaps less violent, but oppressive decades of the New Order, and then the 1990’s reformasi and recent history that perhaps brought an to the end of the curse…
Oh, and you might need a basic understanding of the major groups in Indonesian society. The Indos—mixed-race Dutch (or Japanese, or any other Eurasian mix). The PKI—Communist Party members or supporters (farmers, workers). Muslims—Intellectual liberals and/or fundamentalist, but rarely communist, and often protesting college students. Chinese-Indonesians—the Business Men perhaps allied to or exploited by Suharto. The Indonesian Military—was KNIL, then PETA, then ABRI, now TNI, has a “Dual Function” in that it actually created the state, and was very much involved in politics and business. And the criminal gangs or Preman—think Indonesian Mafia! Unity in Diversity! Yah!
If the last paragraph confused you, I would suggest reading a few Wikipedia pages on the Dutch East Indies and then the Republic of Indonesia from 1947 to the present before trying to read this book. Why? Because this complex book is an extended allegory for the birth of and struggle to mature of the Republic of Indonesia. If you want more understanding of recent Indonesian history, read Indonesian Politics Under Suharto: The Rise and Fall of the New Order, by Michael Vatikiotis.
There is something peculiar and cyclical in the history of Indonesia and Kurniawan maximizes that. The more you know about Indonesia and its people, the more you will understand and the more you will get the many jokes and scathing political comments in this book. But Beauty is a Wound will teach a reader new to Indonesia plenty about what really happened in Java after the Japanese invaded. And it is not a pretty picture.
Here’s the mystery about Indonesia, those people who love her, love her WITH all her faults, and she has plenty. There is still rural poverty and city slums, but there is incredible art and creativity, there are astounding natural riches, there was political suppression, but there is a high literacy rate and huge middle class, there are huge environmental issues, there is beauty beyond belief. That’s what makes Indonesia interesting and creates that “perasaan,” that weird sensation of Indonesia that Kurniawan captures. There is something addicting about Indonesia. Once you have been to Indonesia, most people want to go back. And I bet that is why Kurniawan made Dewi Ayu a prostitute that men wanted to return to. Read this book and you will also know this Beautiful Indonesia—one you will never learn about in any school.
But the real prize for reading this book is seeing just how Kurniawan actually puts all this together into a cohesive, entertaining tale!
And Yes, he does that. I read this thick book in a few days. I did not want to put it down. I am obsessed with Indonesia. I already know what Indo means, I already know what dog eater connotes, I know what Belanda and totok mean. But that’s because I had a Belanda stepfather who was born a totok in Bandung, West Java and the history of much of this book was his personal heartrending story as well. And the most significant other person is my life is a multilayered Orang Sunda from West Java. For an American, I am about as familiar with Indo-Dutch, Indos and Indonesians as I could possibly get without being born to it myself.
This book should be on the reading list at every University Asian Studies Program in the English Speaking World. This book tells all sides of these horrendous events. It is not a dry political textbook by some Western political academic looking down at Indonesia as a specimen of military oppression of democracy or as a petri dish of surprising economic development. It is not slanted toward the military, the PKI, or any one group. It is not apologizing or apologetics for any of those horrid events. It does not worry about who was right or wrong or if it was the fault of the Dutch, the Japanese, the Military, the PKI, the passive population, Sukarno, or Suharto. Indonesia and her people just struggle through 50 years of violence and social and creative suppression.
This book is important because it may mark the absolute end of the events it spears so well. The book’s existence may mean Indonesia has reached a point at which Indonesian civil society, democratic rule, and intellectual freedom and creativity are relatively safe from being screwed again.
Indonesia, and particularly for me, West Java where fictional Halimunda seems to be located, have some kind of magic power that permeates your soul and heart. Once she really gets her hooks in you, you emotionally live in that “perasaan” forever. If like Dewi Ayu, I was forced to consider leaving the “Indonesia” in my heart, I would, like her, answer, “I’m not going.”

An original and thought-provoking read

Beauty is a Wound is one of only two (so far) works by Indonesian journalist, writer and designer, Eka Kurniawan that have been translated into English. Twelve days after she gave birth to her fourth daughter (ironically named Beauty), Dewi Ayu, even at fifty-two still the most beautiful and desired prostitute in the Javan city of Halimunda, wrapped herself in a burial shroud and died. Twenty-one years later, she rose from grave, to the shock of the neighbourhood. Her reasons for doing so were not immediately apparent.

Kurniawan’s epic tale extends over almost a century and, against the backdrop of Dutch Colonial days and the Japanese wartime occupation through the struggles for independence to the modern day, tells the story of an extended Indonesian family: births, marriages, deaths and everything in between. There is plenty of humour and some sweet romance, but this family (like many in Indonesia) also suffers its share of tragedies, or perhaps even moreso. There is quite a lot of violence, again an accurate reflection of life in those times in that country: rapes, massacres, murders and beatings are described in a very matter-of-fact style.

Kurniawan’s tale demonstrates how corruption, propaganda, the power of petty despots, the impotence of the Police force and control of the media are all accepted aspects of everyday life in Indonesia. The attitude of those petty despots is summarised thus: “’Comrade Kliwon … is quite sympathetic and works hard to remedy the misfortunes of others….sometimes I think he’s the only person in this city who looks toward the future with hope.’ ‘That’s what communists are like. Pathetic people who don’t realise this world is destined to be the most rotten place imaginable. That’s the only reason God promised heaven, as a comfort to the wretched masses’”

This is a rambling story that is certainly reminiscent of Garcia Marquez and Rushdie, although, while Rushdie tends to never use two words when three or five will do, Kurniawan is much more succinct. Some elements of the supernatural feature: mainly ghosts and channelling of the dead, and of course, folklore and superstition are commonplace. The prose is quite basic, the dialogue often rather earthy: it is easy to read; a background knowledge of Indonesian history and politics is helpful, but not essential. Translation of this impressive work from the Indonesian has been achieved by Annie Tucker. An original and thought-provoking read. 4.5stars

Why does Kurniawan write about rape as a `natural' part of desire and courtship?? Is this an Indonesian or Muslim concept?

Kurniawan is definitely a magical realist. I really enjoyed that quality of the work where realistic action can take place and then the fantastic element comes in as though it was usual. The story is also a sprawling saga over a few generations, mainly focussing on one woman's family.

My greatest shock and incredible unease is that he writes about the desire men feel for the female characters as rape. His male protagonists often look at a female character and want to `rape her' and this happens with quite a few of the relationships. They start off with rape and end up as something else. I wonder if this is a Muslim concept that doesn't translate comfortably into English. Our authors don't write about natural every day desire in such a brutal and violent way. If there is rape it is then a violent and negative act.

About the Author
Olson was converted and called to ministry while studying engineering and majored in theology at Dallas Seminary. Ministering in Pakistan (1956-64) he founded the Pakistan Fellowship of Evangelical Students, and today 1600 students participate in 95 Bible study groups. He ministered in Urdu in indigenous Brethren assemblies, helped organize the Evangelical Fellowship of Pakistan, and edited correspondence lessons. While teaching theology and missions at Northeastern Bible College for 24 years, he spoke in 300 churches and pastored 4 in metro NYC, was Bible answerman on WFME for a decade, and a trustee member of 3 mission agencies. He received a doctorate in missiology from Trinity Int. Univ. and is currently a Bible/missions conference speaker. His wife, Dottie, was a missionary to Zambia and Korea.

A Biblically Balanced Approach to Soteriology

C. Gordon Olson has done a marvelous job of evaluating both Calvinism and Arminianism, showing the deficiencies of both systems, plotting a more Biblical approach to soteriology in this volume. When it comes to soteriology, I doubt that any volume will find 100% agreement with any particular reader all points addressed, but this volume comes about as close as I could hope for in presenting a balanced, Biblical soteriology. Along with Olson's book, I would also recomment Michael Eaton's No Condemnation: A Theology of Assurance of Salvation.

I found myself picking it up and spending time looking at vairous chapters even after having finished the first read. The depth of thought and research was all I could have hoped for and the index will make it very useful in the future when I have questions. Of specific help was the way Acts 13:48 was explained. I liked it enough to loan out my first copy and buy four more to give to men I hope will give it a read.

Excellent in depth study

It's a book a theology, but it is also an investigation about the Gospel message grounded on the Word of God (with many references to Greek words). I like the inductive method and the balance of the author. He has the courage to show that Calvinism and Arminianism alike can be a hindrance to see the true Gospel.
