A chapter on biopharmaceuticals, whose discovery and development tend to follow routes somewhat different from synthetic compounds, is included here, as well as accounts of patent issues that arise in the discovery phase, and a chapter on research management in this environment. The third section of the book deals with drug development: the work that has to be undertaken to turn the drug candidate that emerges from the discovery process into a product on the market.

Truly Exemplary Book!

Coming up with adequate superlatives to describe this book is difficult.
Suffice to say, for anyone interested in a career in pharmaceutical discovery or development, this book is an INDISPENSABLE guide, containing tons of stuff you need to know, and so far as I can tell, nothing you don't.
If not for this book, I would probably have spent countless hours scouring the internet and maybe several books to try to stitch together a similar picture. Not only would I have failed in gaining an adequate understanding of the drug industry, but I would have spent far more time failing than how long it has taken me to read this book.
It's thorough and sparing, as I mentioned before. It's clearly written. It's a brilliant mix of commercial concerns and scientific processes. I feel I am getting real "insider information" reading this book. Sure, I might not learn any secrets, but to my knowledge no one else has packaged this information in such a way as to make it accessible to anyone lucky enough to stumble upon a certain book.
So bravo, Hill, Rang et al.! You've saved me from surely burning out before even finishing my undergraduate education. You've shown me the "light at the end of the tunnel." You've helped keep me focused on what matters in my education, and given me the peace of mind to forget about anything unimportant.

The second edition was just published last summer I believe, so the information is really up-to-date, which is obviously of utmost importance in such a rapidly progressing field.

Excellent Resource for knowledge on the Drug Discovery Process

This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in Drug Discovery and Development as well as Clinical Research and Clinical Trials. This book discusses the process of taking a concept to development of a drug. Processes such as HTS and In Silico are discussed in this book as well as the different phases of a clinical trial. This is an excellent resource that is very informative and a pleasure to read!
