this book is dry, dry, dry. i bought it for use in a graduate-level class and used it VERY sparingly. i don't recommend it unless you need it for class and/or you love overly technical explanations. think wikipedia science entries.

About the Author
John Wycliffe (also spelled Wyclif, Wycliff, Wiclef, Wicliffe, or Wickliffe) was born about 1324. His family was long settled in Yorkshire, centered around Wycliffe-on-Tees. Wycliffe pursued an avid interest in Biblical studies, and between 1366 and 1372 he became a Doctor of Divinity, lecturing on systematic divinity and writing his Summa Theologica. Wycliffe’s theology was greatly influenced by Augustine, and his ecclesiology adapted from William of Occam. His preaching contained a strong belief in the “invisible” church of the elect, rather than in the “visible” Church of Rome. Appalled at the abuse of church finances, his fundamental belief was that the Church should be poor, as in the days of the apostles. Wycliffe aimed to do away with the existing hierarchy and replace it with the “poor priests” who lived in poverty, were bound by no vows, had received no formal consecration, and preached the simple Gospel to the people. These itinerant preachers spread the teachings of Wycliffe. Two by two they went, barefoot, wearing long dark-red robes and carrying a staff in the hand, and they passed from place to place preaching the gospel. The bull of Gregory XI impressed upon them the name of “Lollards,” intended as an opprobrious epithet, but it became to them a name of honor. The term “Lollards” is likely derived from the Dutch word lollaerd signifying a “mutterer” or a “mumbler” who did not speak in Latin (the language of academia and the church). Even in Wycliffe’s time the “Lollards” had an extensive popular influence in England. Historical evaluation of his endeavors have led to the appellation of Wycliffe as “the Morning Star of the Reformation,” having espoused many of the tenets that were more fully developed in the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century.

A Stunning Production

This is such a beautiful book. I have always loved the Wycliffe Bible, but could never afford the millions of dollars that it would cost to own one. I have Dr Donald Brake's monochrome facsimile from the 1980s when costs forbad the production of a colour facsimile, and which even then cost five times what this present book costs. But now, thanks to today's technology, here it is in full colour. Magnificent! It's just like reading the real thing but without the risk of spoiling a priceless original. My congratulations and warmest thanks to its publisher for making such a work available at such a low price! No Bible lover's library should be without it.

Not cheap, but an excellent product

Even though I really, really hesitated about paying this much for paperback book, this is no cheap common item. A large item, 11inx8.5inx1in, and it is a very, very nice facsimlie...a piece of history. I do wish it was a bit less costly, but it is a very nice item.

It feels like it is self published... in a self published way

I must admit, I have a special soft spot for the Wycliffe's version and its peculiar medieval English. I also really love that this facsimile reproduces the manuscript exactly as the text was about 1400, with the thorn and yogh and everything. No other printed version I know of preserves the yogh character, which greatly aids in comprehending the text accurately. Many other versions transcribe the yogh as a y in all circumstances, which is misleading as there are actual y's in the text, and the transcription makes it sound as if the verb "gave" was spelled and pronounced "yaf" instead of something like "ghaf".

Though, to be honest, if you're looking for a way to read a Wycliffe bible manuscript with yoghs and thorns, you might actually be better off downloading the high quality PDF of this manuscript from Harvard for free at this website:[...]

The reason I mention the digital download is because this isn't the best physical book I've had.

I bought the book because I liked the Wycliffe bible. But the bindings I find quite a let-down. It really does feel self-published in a self-published kind of way. The cover has a faux-medieval font with drop shadows. The first few pages (title and introduction) are printed on an ugly yellow background and there are more faux-medieval fake fake calligraphy fonts, and then a decidedly plain Times New Roman. I don't even know what I have against fonts that look like medieval scripts except I just can't stand the look of computerised gothic fonts. People in the Middle Ages didn't have computer fonts like that. It really breaks the suspension of disbelief with me.

The bindings are a little bit dodge as well. There's a big crack in one spot if I let it flop open.

I'm sad that this is only available in soft cover. I'm actually trying to see if I can have it rebound hard cover. That way I can get rid of the ugly fonts on the cover and make it have bindings which imitate its original bindings (plain white vellum, with other minor details as shown on the scans from Harvard). It will probably cost a lot, but hey, I do really like the Wycliffe bible. And then it will not feel as embarrassed to hang out on my shelf next to my other nicely bound bibles. Otherwise, what's the point of having a physical copy, if it doesn't show well on the shelf?

On another note, perhaps my judgement is swayed by the fact that it doesn't smell nice. It carries a slightly unsavoury hint of vanilla, mixed with an old colour photocopier smell. It's an odd complaint to make, but smell is admittedly part of the book-enjoyment process. The Tyndale facsimile (from the British Library and Hendrickson Bibles) on the other hand smells wonderful, crisp, like new books should smell.

This work by the authors of A Long Hard Journey--The Story of the Pullman Porter is a great deal more than a biography of a remarkable woman. The forceful narrative also offers a startling portrayal of a pivotal yet appalling era in American history. Born a slave in Ulster County, N.Y., in 1797, "Hardenbergh's Belle" (so named after her first owner) had been bought and sold by several masters by the time she was a teenager. In 1826, betrayed by an owner who reneged on his promise to free her if she "worked extra hard," Belle made the first of many intrepid moves, and escaped with her youngest child. After living for some time in New York City, in 1843 the deeply religious woman followed what she interpreted as a directive from God and, assuming the name of Sojourner Truth, went off "to do the Lord's work." For the rest of her long life, the indefatigable abolitionist and feminist journeyed from one state to another, delivering her impressively articulate message at anti-slavery and women's rights conventions--often to hostile, jeering audiences. The authors' meticulously researched account describes Truth's relationships with such noted figures as William Lloyd Garrison, Frederick Douglass, Harriet Beecher Stowe and Abraham Lincoln, underscoring the book's value as a chronicle of not just one, but many courageous individuals' battles against injustice. Grade 5-8-- With compassion and historical detail, the McKissacks offer a rich profile of Isabella Van Wagener. Her experiences as both slave and freed slave in New York shaped her midlife commitment to abolition and women's rights. At age 46, she received a call to "walk in the light of His truth." Henceforward, her name was Sojourner Truth and, although she never learned to read or write, the six-foot tall woman became a striking, eloquent spokesperson whose wit, common sense, and candor popularized her with audiences throughout New England and the Midwest. This biography draws personal information from many of the same sources cited in other recent biographies by Lindstrom (Messner, 1980; o.p.), Taylor-Boyd (Gareth Stevens, 1990), and Macht (Chelsea, 1992). But the McKissacks emphasize the condition of African-Americans from 1797-1883, their subject's convictions and magnetism, her contributions to the welfare of her people, and her involvement with other influential abolitionists and activists during the last 40 years of her life. Brief profiles of these acquaintances, from Susan B. Anthony to Harriet Tubman, are appended. Sojourner Truth, an Inspiring Lady.

This book starts out with the birth of Sojourner Truth and takes you all the way through her life. You learn about her as a slave, as a free woman, as a preacher, an abolitionist, and an activist for the rights of both blacks and woman.
I personally did not know much about Sojourner Truth, but I do now.
If you are looking for a great novel to entertain you or for something to keep you on the edge of your seat, then this book probably isn't what your looking for. If you want to learn about history and an inspiring lady than I would say pick up this book and read. There is nothing worng with knowledge and this book is a great way to learn.

This is a captivating story of the life of Sojourner Truth--herstruggles as a slave, as a mother, and as a woman, and how sheovercame those struggles to be one of the most amazing abolitionistsin America.
Great for kids. Full of primary sources, includingpictures, quotes, letters, and speeches. Also includes bios of otheramazing abolitionists and activists such as Frederick Douglass, SusanB. Anthony, Lucretia Mott, and Harriet Tubman.

Sojourner Truth Ain't I a Woman

Sojouner Truth Ain't I a Woman takes place in the 1700's-1800's, about 300 years ago. This genre is non-fiction. If you like true stories then read this!
This story is about black people being slaves. Sojouner works for a family that beats her. She works for them for about 13 years. Then she gets sold again and the family tells her she can leave at 27 years (a year before she is suppose to.) The family says, "No you can't leave we changed our mind," when she was about to leave. They finally make a deal and say, "Okay, you can leave."
She knows she has no place to live and people invite her to live with them, but she has to work for them to get money. Then she leaves and tells stories of her life and people like the stories!

When I read this book, I thought to myself, I feel sorry for black people back then. I really loved this book so much! My opinion is if you are prejudiced then you should read this book, and that might change your mind.

About the Author
Robert Palmer was the New York Times's first full-time rock writer and chief pop critic (1976-1988) and has been a contributing editor at Rolling Stone since the early seventies. He has taught courses in American music at Yale, Carnegie-Mellon, Bowdoin, the University of Mississippi, and Brooklyn College, where he was the first Senior Research Fellow of the Institute for Studies in American Music to teach and write a musicological monograph on rock and roll. He is the author of Deep Blues and other books, and served as writer and music director for two award-winning documentary films, The World According to John Coltrane and Deep Blues. Since producing the latter film's sound track CD for Atlantic Records, he has produced a number of raw juke joint blues CDs for the Fat Possum label, winning a number of polls and awards. He acted as the chief advisor to the ten-part WGBH/BBC series.

Fantastic effort

Palmer's love of the blues shines through in this exceptional book. He's not interested in showing off his knowledge of the form (although that knowledge is exceptional); he's interested in illuminating for the reader the roots of a great indigenous art form and how that form developed in the 20th century. In that effort, he succeeds masterfully.
A fine early section explores how the music that we call the blues was seeded in N. America by African music. That chapter is a mini-history lesson in itself; Palmer shows how the music of slaves from W. Africa was viewed as subversive and dangerous by whites in the new land.
The remainder of the book is chock full of portraits of the heroes of early blues in the Mississippi Delta, from Charley Patton to Son House to Robert Johnson to Little Walter to Muddy Waters and beyond. Palmer shows how these men developed a music that grew directly out of the soil of the Delta, making do with the instruments they had and often living itinerant lives, moving from tiny town to tiny town to play dances and juke joints to keep the music alive.
The book also describes the historic migration of African-Americans from the Deep South to the industrial cities of the North, most importantly, of course, Chicago, where the musicians transformed the blues again, creating the electrified sounds that exerted such a powerful influence on white rock musicians from London to Liverpool to La Jolla, California.
Palmer has given us a great work with "Deep Blues," one that should be read by students of music and social history alike. It deserves a prominent place on the bookshelf of any serious lover of music.

Simply The Best

There's no other way to put it, this is simply the best book out there on the blues both as a music form and as force in shaping American culture. At once simple and concise, yet broad and in depth enough to tell a very complete story, this one work should satisfy everyone from the novice to the experienced blues fan.
Meticulously researched, Palmer uses Muddy Waters as a jumping off point to explore the history and evolution of the blues as music as well as the society and culture from which it sprang. He peppers his work with amazing anecdotes, from the story of Robert Johnson, the Band meeting a dying Sonny Boy Williamson, an aging Howlin' Wolf giving a phenominal concert that add color to his story and helps make his frequent forays into musicology more tolerable to the non-musician. Best of all is the sense of time and place the book evokes, from plantations and dark swamps in rural Mississippi, to the noisy, crowed streets of South Chicago at the peak of the Great Migration, to small clubs and long forgotten juke-joints.
I read this book for the first time 10 years or so ago and have probably reread it 5 times since. I keep coming up with new things to admire about the book every time. That so much richness can be packed into such a short readable work is amazing. This book triumphs over everything else written on the subject and only leaves you wanting to explore further.

The Best Place to Start and End

Palmer's book was my introduction to the blues and I'm very glad of it because it's so wide and deep (like varying parts of the Mississippi River). You read this, you get the big picture story of the Delta Blues, how the music migrated to Chicago and other big cities and why it's so important to so much great music that came after it. It begins with musical historian Alan Lomax's fruitless search for Robert Johnson and ends with an older Muddy Waters, successful and wealthy, reflecting on his amazing journey. In between, we meet all the other players in Delta Blues, learn how the genre sprang up and see how it was adopted and copied wholesale by a slew of successful British and American rock 'n' rollers. Palmer never talks down to the reader but keeps his prose lively enough to entertain and educate a person with knowledge of the blues yet accessible enough to teach a neophyte. I find I come back to this book often to flesh out details of stories or anecdotes I've read elsewhere.

Words do have colors!

This is one of my most favorite books ever!
It is a coming of age novel of a young girl in the Dom. Republic.
Through poetry at the begining of each chapter the mood is sucsesfully set, telling of a girl who lives in poverty and the restrictions of the government. When she tries with the help of her family to resist them trying to take her property, she is struck by tragedy.
This is a beautiful, moving book that might cause a few tears. I cannot say enough about it.
I'm sure it will inspire others like it inspired me!

A Review of Snowed in with the Bad Boy by Sylvia Pierce

Sylvia has done it again! This may be a short book, but boy is it packed with a punch! We meet Ronan, who is a retired black ops agent, living in the middle of nowhere in Colorado. He's in the middle of a fantasy of what he would ask Santa for if he still believed in Christmas, when there's a knock on his door.

Georgie is dressed up as an elf, on her way to surprise her family for Christmas Eve when a blizzard causes her to lose control of her car and she ends up in a snowbank at the end of a driveway. She treks up to the cabin and is instantly fascinated with the man that opens the door. When she asks to use his phone, he gives her a rude answer instead of simply telling her the phone lines are down.

I don't want to give away too much about what happens, but you will definitely want to pick this one up and read it! There are no cliffhangers, but I certainly hope that we get to see more of these two in the near future!

This was a beautiful story, well written, sexy and interesting my only wish is that it was longer. I felt the story ended too soon there was more potential there for what happens after Christmas! So I feel a bit of angst that the couple got together out of sheer accident, over the course of 2 days and there is no end game to the story. Readers love happy endings or endings that go somewhere. It just dropped off.... Okay we live across the U.S. From each other but we will be together ...thanks for reading... Goodbye ...okay angst over... It is still a interesting book just has potential to be a phenomenal book!

HOLY BAD BOY HOTNESS with HEART! This is exactly the kind of book I love to read during the holidays. Not only did it have a sexy bad boy, a cozy snowed-in cabin, and SMOKING HOT SEXY SCENES, this story was also chock full of clever, laugh out loud banter and a unexpectedly sweet romance in the middle of it all. Ronan and Georgie--each with their own hidden wounds--charmed me. I fell hard for this good girl with a naughty streak and this bad boy with a heart of gold and I can't wait for more from Sylvia. She's on my watch list!

I wish I would have found this dynamite "Step one, step two, step three" MBED STM32 book a year ago!

I got the bug to learn about Arduino microprocessors here at a fairly late age. It's been fun gathering the bits and pieces together and experimenting with a wide variety of controlled projects now. Somewhere in my research and studies I stumbled upon the MBED site. Out of curiosity I looked into the cost for the STM32 boards in particular and was stunned at what I found as far as cost/performance in a microprocessor board. More speed, more memory, more pins, but more confusion, for sure. I bought a couple of the boards at under $15 each (!!!) and the look pretty in my drawer neatly titled, "STM32 MBED boards," I pull them out once in a while and admire them. Unfortunately, while the MBED site seemed more user friendly about a year ago, now I go there for guidance and it reads, "ARM and its Partners share a disruptive vision where the creation and deployment of commercial, standards-based Internet of Things devices is possible at scale. I am struggling with Arduinos, guys, what the heck does "disruptive" and "at scale" mean to me, a guy just trying to get one of these fancier boards to blink and LED. Long story short, I was lost and the MBED site in it's latest iteration did not seem very helpful at least to me at my entry (at best) skill level.

I then stumbled upon this $3 book this morning. Good gravy Agus, your book is EXACTLY what a beginner like me needs to understand how to start using these STM32 marvels. Yes, they are as cool as the look and yes it is (or soon will be) possible to make them what my Arduinos do and much more at greater speed and with headroom for future projects.

Great introduction to ST's Nucleos

Great introduction to ST's Nucleos. Many alternatives to program. The easiest, compile with Mbed.org, then drag and drop the .bin file into the flash device that shows up as storage. How easy can it be! BTW a Nucleo is like dropping a Porsche engine into a VW compared to an Arduino for about 12 bucks! Still love the Arduino, but when you need fast ADC, Nucleo is the way to go.

Worth every cent of the modest $3 purchase price

Agus Kurniawan has written many introductory books about various micro-controllers and microcomputers. Every one I have seen is excellent, and well worth the modest purchase price. This one, about the STM32 Nucleo evaluation boards, is worth even more, as it explains what ST hides. If you look at the package that a Nucleo board comes in, it says, in essence, for more information go to their website. This is the equivalent of someone asking for directions and simply being told to go to New York City. The ST web site is a total waste of time unless you know exactly what you are looking for, and where to find it. You will be lead on wild goose chases, with circular links, and the same product being referred to by multiple names, until you are screaming with frustration. Agus saves you that all trouble by buying his $3 book. Knowledge is always worth paying for, and the $3 for this book is mere chump change. Thank you Agus Kurinawan for all your help.

Every librarian needs one of these!

I discovered this book while doing a Visiting Author presentation in a small school just last week. It's something every librarian can use! I plan to use this book as part of my Visiting Author presentations and am recommending it to all of the librarians I work with. Some of the information may be a bit above K-2, but it is one of the best teaching tools that connects books in a personal way to each reader that I've come across as an author myself in my 20 plus years of doing Visiting Author presentations. Thanks! Just wish I'd found it sooner!

Good book

I bought this to use in my library with kindergarteners for learning the parts of a book. I like the topic and presentation of the book (very appealing illustrations and appropriate comparisons of books and body parts) but found that some of the information in the main text is a little too advanced for kindergarteners. Will definitely continue to use it, but may skip some parts/pages for the little guys.
