About the Author
John Wycliffe (also spelled Wyclif, Wycliff, Wiclef, Wicliffe, or Wickliffe) was born about 1324. His family was long settled in Yorkshire, centered around Wycliffe-on-Tees. Wycliffe pursued an avid interest in Biblical studies, and between 1366 and 1372 he became a Doctor of Divinity, lecturing on systematic divinity and writing his Summa Theologica. Wycliffe’s theology was greatly influenced by Augustine, and his ecclesiology adapted from William of Occam. His preaching contained a strong belief in the “invisible” church of the elect, rather than in the “visible” Church of Rome. Appalled at the abuse of church finances, his fundamental belief was that the Church should be poor, as in the days of the apostles. Wycliffe aimed to do away with the existing hierarchy and replace it with the “poor priests” who lived in poverty, were bound by no vows, had received no formal consecration, and preached the simple Gospel to the people. These itinerant preachers spread the teachings of Wycliffe. Two by two they went, barefoot, wearing long dark-red robes and carrying a staff in the hand, and they passed from place to place preaching the gospel. The bull of Gregory XI impressed upon them the name of “Lollards,” intended as an opprobrious epithet, but it became to them a name of honor. The term “Lollards” is likely derived from the Dutch word lollaerd signifying a “mutterer” or a “mumbler” who did not speak in Latin (the language of academia and the church). Even in Wycliffe’s time the “Lollards” had an extensive popular influence in England. Historical evaluation of his endeavors have led to the appellation of Wycliffe as “the Morning Star of the Reformation,” having espoused many of the tenets that were more fully developed in the Protestant Reformation of the sixteenth century.

A Stunning Production

This is such a beautiful book. I have always loved the Wycliffe Bible, but could never afford the millions of dollars that it would cost to own one. I have Dr Donald Brake's monochrome facsimile from the 1980s when costs forbad the production of a colour facsimile, and which even then cost five times what this present book costs. But now, thanks to today's technology, here it is in full colour. Magnificent! It's just like reading the real thing but without the risk of spoiling a priceless original. My congratulations and warmest thanks to its publisher for making such a work available at such a low price! No Bible lover's library should be without it.

Not cheap, but an excellent product

Even though I really, really hesitated about paying this much for paperback book, this is no cheap common item. A large item, 11inx8.5inx1in, and it is a very, very nice facsimlie...a piece of history. I do wish it was a bit less costly, but it is a very nice item.

It feels like it is self published... in a self published way

I must admit, I have a special soft spot for the Wycliffe's version and its peculiar medieval English. I also really love that this facsimile reproduces the manuscript exactly as the text was about 1400, with the thorn and yogh and everything. No other printed version I know of preserves the yogh character, which greatly aids in comprehending the text accurately. Many other versions transcribe the yogh as a y in all circumstances, which is misleading as there are actual y's in the text, and the transcription makes it sound as if the verb "gave" was spelled and pronounced "yaf" instead of something like "ghaf".
Though, to be honest, if you're looking for a way to read a Wycliffe bible manuscript with yoghs and thorns, you might actually be better off downloading the high quality PDF of this manuscript from Harvard for free at this website:[...]
The reason I mention the digital download is because this isn't the best physical book I've had.
I bought the book because I liked the Wycliffe bible. But the bindings I find quite a let-down. It really does feel self-published in a self-published kind of way. The cover has a faux-medieval font with drop shadows. The first few pages (title and introduction) are printed on an ugly yellow background and there are more faux-medieval fake fake calligraphy fonts, and then a decidedly plain Times New Roman. I don't even know what I have against fonts that look like medieval scripts except I just can't stand the look of computerised gothic fonts. People in the Middle Ages didn't have computer fonts like that. It really breaks the suspension of disbelief with me.
The bindings are a little bit dodge as well. There's a big crack in one spot if I let it flop open.
I'm sad that this is only available in soft cover. I'm actually trying to see if I can have it rebound hard cover. That way I can get rid of the ugly fonts on the cover and make it have bindings which imitate its original bindings (plain white vellum, with other minor details as shown on the scans from Harvard). It will probably cost a lot, but hey, I do really like the Wycliffe bible. And then it will not feel as embarrassed to hang out on my shelf next to my other nicely bound bibles. Otherwise, what's the point of having a physical copy, if it doesn't show well on the shelf?
On another note, perhaps my judgement is swayed by the fact that it doesn't smell nice. It carries a slightly unsavoury hint of vanilla, mixed with an old colour photocopier smell. It's an odd complaint to make, but smell is admittedly part of the book-enjoyment process. The Tyndale facsimile (from the British Library and Hendrickson Bibles) on the other hand smells wonderful, crisp, like new books should smell.
