About the Author

J.R. Ubejd Mujagic, Ph.D., P.E., S.E. is a senior associate at Uzun & Case Engineers, LLC in Atlanta, GA. He has a diverse experience in the design of metal building systems and low- and high-rise conventional buildings of most types and in all major building materials. Dr. Mujagic holds a Ph.D. in structural engineering from Virginia Tech. His research interests include structural reliability, composite structures and cold-formed steel. He is a member of the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) Committee on Specifications and its subcommittees on connections, diaphragms and seismic design. He is also a member of the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Task Committees on Composite Members and Loads and Analysis. He is a licensed Structural Engineer in California, Illinois and Washington and a registered Professional Engineer in several states.

About the Author
STEPHEN JENKINSON MTS MSW is an activist, teacher, author, and farmer. He has a master's degree in theology from Harvard University and a master's degree in social work from the University of Toronto. Formerly a program director at a major Canadian hospital and medical-school assistant professor, Stephen is now a sought-after workshop leader, speaker, and consultant to palliative care and hospice organizations. He is the founder of The Orphan Wisdom School in Canada and the subject of the documentary film Griefwalker.

slow at first, powerful by the end

I had quite mixed reactions to this book. On the one hand, the author clearly has many years of experience working with dying people, their families, and various health workers. He writes with great sensitivity. Sometimes his stories brought back vivid memories of deaths of loved ones: the mysterious course that life can take; the fear on all sides; the unknowns; the frustration with the medical system; the strangeness of it all (especially watching someone's consciousness wax and wane - can they hear us? are they aware?) and the relief that simple kindness could bring.

Several things make this a difficult read: first, the subject matter; also, an underlying cynicism from Jenkinson, and partly the writing itself, which tends to be wordy and to wander in unexpected directions, the way one might in an impassioned conversation about a cherished subject. Jenkinson repeats his ideas many times, and spends long stretches of the book telling us what is *not* working in our society's approach to death before finally beginning to write about about how to "die wise." He is extremely critical of the modern practices that extend the lives of people with life threatening illnesses, and of palliative care as offered today. The implications and complications of all of this are revisited many times: "more time" (to live) means "more dying" (as opposed to a quick, peaceful death that is not anticipated.)

However, as the chapters go by, Jenkinson's ideas for a better way gradually emerge, and well into the book, he writes eloquently and passionately about true acceptance of death and honest conversation with the dying, as opposed to "cheerleading" and denial of what is really happening. He uses lots of imagery from nature, and occasionally quotes beautiful poetry to underscore his points.

Not the easiest read, but in the midst it all, there are touching and even beautiful moments. Recommended to readers who can be patient and flexible with the above.

like the Cairn

Stephen Jenkinson's Die Wise is a demanding read. This, make no mistake, is a recommendation. Why should it not be, after all, given that he is telling us the story of dying in these times? And how it might be. My father died some sixty years ago now, from acute leukemia, or I should say, in Stephen Jenkinson's definition, he did not die. No one told him about his diagnosis or prognosis, he was left to figure that out himself, no one told his children that he was dying, even though he diminished right in front of us. This was considered compassionate care, well intended surely. It was a lonely and wretched affair. Things are not a whole lot different now. Die Wise is a Cairn on the road we walk through life. Like the Cairn, it is a guide, a reminder, a lament, and a labor of grief and love. Die Wise is written in a language of redemption, of how it might be different in our times. It is fierce, challenging, tender, and full of longing. I want my children and my grandchildren to read it. I want those who might attend my dying and all those whose dying I will be called to attend to read it. It is a gift.

Die Wise is a powerful and uncompromising testament to the way things have gone wrong in our society, and to the great debt we have all forgotten for the privilege of being here. This is a beautiful book. It is full of the heart-wrenching realities that we fail to acknowledge as a society, in the treatment of our death and the deaths of our loved ones. Stephen Jenkinson has an incisive wisdom that is conveyed through a poet's eyes. Still, he maintains the unflinching determination to say what needs to be said regardless of how it will be received. We live in a society that looks to candy-coat every uncomfortable truth, and therefore gives us a free pass to extend our adolescence into our time of dying. Which means that we never see our death, the deaths of others, or have the maturity to honor death for what it is. In this book, Stephen Jenkinson asks us to look at the roots of our perpetually adolescent-minded society so that we can see how deeply it impacts us and the world we live in. It is a call to action that demands that we begin acknowledging and honoring all of our relations in the greater scheme of things, which is to say that we realize that Life means more than just "my life." We are well into the waning arc of the civilization that has birthed and sustained us, it is a time for learning to grieve all that has gone unnoticed, all that has not been honored and because of it is suffering the starvation that is collectively felt and never satiated by our consumer society. It is a starvation of the Soul. While Stephen Jenkinson does not provide any answers as to how we do this, he helps us start to feel around the edges of the hole within us, where one day that Soul can be found in our future generations if we begin the work now. This book is a must read for everyone.

Unbeatable

The Cambridge Interchange series is undoubtedly the best course I have taught for beginning and intermediate students. The activities are engaging and relevant, the grammar is introduced in a way that is informative enough to resolve any pertinent questions, but in a very non-threatening way. I highly recommend the teacher's edition for instructors and the Full Contact edition for students.

By the way, don't make the same mistake I did and mistake this teacher's resource book for the teacher's edition. Teacher's resource book has a few extra activities and worksheets for each chapter, so it may be worth it or not for you to purchase it. I generally get on fine with just the teacher's edition, but since I have it now I'll make good use of it!

Important Content!

I bought this book to fulfill a college course reading requirement. I found it a little difficult to read and get through. This is disappointing since the content is of extreme interest to me. I am still reading it because I want to read the entire book but I believe the issue lies in the way it's been written. The author makes some great points! I feel it could use simpler verbiage and better editing.

Very wordy. Hard to follow. Felt like he was intentionally talking over our heads. Too idealistic.

I continually felt that Sullivan was trying to make a case for expanding the scope of pedagogy at the graduate and post graduate level. Liberal arts programs at the undergraduate level are a fine thing but not when they are designed to train individuals who attend these colleges for the sole purpose of exploring a range of subjects - to think like him - it starts to feel more like subterranean indoctrination. I think this is what's killing liberal arts programs. To turn society around we need to facilitate autonomy through offering students the material and letting them think for themselves. Much of Sullivan's thesis seems to be based on the philosophy of John Dewey who was a devout christian and who believed that it was the teachers role to dispense morality and virtue. He nimbly bypasses William James, father of modern pragmatism and I had to wonder if it was because James was not the "good student" that Dewey was. James was more of a renegade; like Paraselsus.

This book is now four years old, nearly five years since it was written. The major ideas in it are still up-to-date, in fact even more relevant in view of the flood of pseudo-science pushing the idea that all human behaviour originates in our genes.
Nevertheless the book is now ready for revision, and you might like to know that I'm busy revising it now. Lots of new archaeological discoveries need including, and one or two new pieces of information about languages: disappointingly few, actually, because linguists seem to have swallowed the genetic argument, or else to uncomfortably ignore it, rather than trying to take it on. The ghost of Chomsky (well it would be his ghost if he wasn't happily still alive and kicking), let's say the spirit of Chomsky still pervades Western linguistics, while Soviet linguistics has other interests.
So an up-date of this rather individual book should be welcome.

About the Author
Jack Umstatter, M.A., M.Ed., ahs been a high school English teacher for the past 30 years in the public schools of West Islip and Cold Spring Harbor, New York. He has taught all levels of Secondary English including Honor and Advanced Placement Classes at Cold Spring Harbor High School, and also serves as an adjunct assistant professor at Dowling College, Oakdale, New York. Mr. Umstatter's other publications include Brain Games (1996), and Grammar Grabbers (2000).

English teaching made easier!

Have you ever needed an extra exercise to help reinforce that grammar concept that you're not quite sure the students got? How about something interesting to introduce a new unit? This book really does have it all. I was quite impressed with the variety of exercises, as well as levels. The students enjoy doing the exercises because there is usually some kind of puzzle to figure out once they have learned the task. The writing exercises really stretch their creativity. As an English teacher, this is an invaluable book.

A little too basic

I bought this book nine years ago, when I was a second-year teacher looking for teaching/learning activities that would enhance my students' learning in ninth grade English. Unfortunately, I finally had to give my copy to a special education teacher, because it was too basic for my ninth graders, year after year. The activities rarely took over two minutes. A cost/benefit analysis resulted in my opinion that the cost of reproducing the activities overwhelmed the limited benefit my students would get out of it (basically, an easy A paper). I think this book would be better targeted toward the upper elementary grades, rather than 7-12.

It made me "Hooked on English!"

I liked this book so much that when I found out I was not going to be an English teacher anymore and was going to teach math, I still kept the book because it looked like fun to me! The pages are easy to understand and they have a lot of information in fun ways of learning. I think that students would really enjoy this format for learning English.

About the Author
Kathrin A. Stauffer, PhD, was born and educated in Switzerland. Originally a biochemist, she retrained as a body psychotherapist at the Chiron Centre for Body Psychotherapy in London and Cambridge. She currently works in private practice in Cambridge and London as a body psychotherapist, biodynamic massage therapist, trainer and supervisor.
